TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida State women’s tennis team showed improvement in doubles play Saturday as the Seminoles posted a victory in the prequalifying doubles round. FSU will hit the courts on Sunday at 9 a.m. to battle for two more wins in order to make it to the qualifying round.

The dynamic duo of senior Lauren McCreless (Macfarlane) and junior Federica Suess teamed up to defeat Columbia’s Bartnik and Makarova 8-6 and now face Finnegan and White of Illinois tomorrow morning.

“It’s always difficult to play a first-round match on the road” FSU Associate Head Coach Oliver Foreman said. “The nerves and apprehension of competition can sometimes overwhelm you, and at the start it was clear both teams were nervous. As the matched progressed Lauren and Fede did a good job of loosening up and started to execute better on the bigger points. It was a good win to start the All-American Championships off because I think Lauren and Fede had a chance to learn a lot from the match.”

As the lone Seminole to compete in the prequalifying singles round today, No. 93 McCreless fell to USC’s Danielle Lao in a two-set defeat 6-1, 6-2.

“Lauren’s first four games of the match I feel almost dictated the match,” Coach Foreman said. “Lauren could have easily found herself 4-1 up, but not executing quite like she should have, she found herself 4-1 down. She put herself in a good position at the start of the match but just couldn’t quite find her range today. Danielle is a good front runner and her confidence grew with the lead, started to play more aggressive and played a very tight match. Lauren will certainly learn from that match and I feel she will bounce back with doing well in doubles.”

Prequalifying doubles play will continue tomorrow morning at 9:00 a.m. Keep up with the Seminoles on twitter @fsu_wtennis and www.seminoles.com.
