TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida State’s Lauren McCreless (Macfarlane) and Federica Suess posted two doubles victories Sunday, October 4, to advance to the qualifying round of the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships. FSU will be back in action on Tuesday for the qualifying round of singles and doubles.
“I’m proud of the girls today,” FSU Associate Head Coach Oliver Foreman said. “They showed some tremendous resilience through both matches today. I don’t believe they are playing close to their best doubles out there, but the fact that they continue to keep winning shows their heart and passion for winning out there. To find themselves 5-1 down in the second doubles of the day (last round qualifying) against a very good team that just beat a top Georgia team and finding a way to win makes me as a coach extremely proud.”
McCreless and Suess opened the day in a battle against Finnegan and White of Illinois. The Seminoles trumped the Illini 8-6 and turned their attention to the fourth round. With three wins under their belt, the Garnet and Gold needed just one more win to advance to the next round.
The last round of the prequalifying doubles draw featured McCreless and Suess facing Scott and Winingham of Dartmouth. After a hard fought match, FSU came out with the 9-7 victory over the Big Green and will now move on to the qualifying doubles draw.
“They have improved with each match they have played, and have started to complement one another on court,” Coach Foreman said. “They understand the importance in doubles and with their sheer willingness to not lose will take them a long way in this tournament. Lauren’s done a great job of bouncing back from her singles defeat and has done a great job leading the Seminoles through to the qualifying round.”
McCreless, Suess, Noemie Scharle and Katie Rybakova all hit the courts Tuesday, October 6, at 9:00 a.m. PDT (12:00 p.m. EST.) for the qualifying singles and doubles draw. Fans are encouraged to keep up with the Seminoles on twitter @fsu_wtennis and www.seminoles.com.
