FSU Quiets the Lions Roar with Win at Home

Tallahassee – The Florida State women’s tennis team (10-4) notched its tenth win of the season beating the Penn State Nittany Lions 6-1 at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center in Tallahassee, FL on Wednesday afternoon. The win signals the end of a five-match homestand and non-conference play.

Junior Mihaela Moldovan (Bucharest, Romania/Emil Racovita) won her 14th straight singles match, besting Megan Marton in straight sets 6-1, 6-2 at the number two position. The reigning NCAA South Region Rookie of the Year tied the record, previously held by Kia Asberg (1999) and Marina Raic (1999), on Monday in the match against Michigan State.

Senior Christina Denny (Canton, Ohio/Bradenton Academy) won at the number three position beating Maaria Husain 6-2, 6-4. At the four spot, newcomer Lindsay Deason (St. Petersburg, FL/Boca Raton Prep) faced Sarah Spence in a winning effort, taking the match 6-0, 7-5. Freshman Roxanne Clarke (Cape Town, South Africa/Clapham) came out with a win against Sasha Abraham in two sets, 6-2, 6-1. Junior Amberly Tantee (Dana Point, CA/Futures) clinched the match for Florida State, playing out of the six slot, besting Lindsay Downing, 6-0, 6-2.

In doubles, the Seminoles took the point, winning two of three matches. Dumitrescu and Deason beat Husain and Jessica McKeown 8-2 while senior Brooke Cordell (Soddy Daisy, TN/Tennessee) paired with Denny at the number three position, taking the match against Abraham and Katelyn BeVard 8-4.

The Seminoles travel north this weekend, facing Maryland and Virginia on Saturday and Sunday, March 12 and 13. First serve is set for 11:00 a.m. on both days.
