ORLANDO, Fla. – Even though the venue changed to the Grand Cypress Racquet Club, The Florida State women’s tennis team continued to be competitive in the USTA Clay Court Invitational in Orlando, Fla.

Daneika Borthwick looked impressive in her 6-1, 6-2 win over Florida’s Stefani Stojic to advance to the quarterfinals. The junior from Cumbria, England then fought well in a long three-setter in the afternoon, but eventually fell to Megan McCray (OkSt) 2-6, 7-6 (4), 6-2.

“Daneika did a great job in her first match of the day, never allowing her opponent to get into the match. She played a perfect game for two sets,” said head coach Jennifer Hyde. “In her quarterfinal match this afternoon, she did everything right to counter a very hard hitting player. She had a few match points on her strings at 5-4 in the second set, and I know she would be very happy to get one of those back.”

Kerrie Cartwright showed great toughness and endurance in her consolation match against Michaela Bezdickova of UNM. Despite falling 2-6 in the first, the junior fought back to take the second set 6-2 and eventually the match on a 10-7 tiebreaker.

“Kerrie had a very tough first set today and was slow to find her rhythm,” Hyde said. “By the middle of the first set, she started to execute better. Despite losing that set, Kerrie was starting to take control of the match.

“Her A-game was on from the start of the second set, and she did some great work to tie the match at a set apiece. Every point in the third-set 10-point breaker was long, and very good tennis was being played on both sides of the net. Kerrie did an excellent job of fighting through the breaker and closing out the match on her first match point opportunity.”

Duda dos Santos played well in her consolation match but was outlasted by Texas Tech’s Beatriz Santos, 6-4, 6-1. Majlena Pedersen withdrew from her morning match due to injury.

On the doubles side, Laurence Porry and dos Santos advanced to the quarterfinals when Tulsa’s Nemchen and Cichon withdrew with an injury. The pairing of Borthwick and Cartwright were in the final match of the day and strung together some quality points and rallies, but couldn’t catch UNM’s Bezdickova and Blankers, falling 8-3.

Saturday morning brings additional singles consolation matches, with 8:30 a.m. matches for Cartwright and dos Santos, while Mia Vriens and Porry will go at 9:30 a.m. Porry and dos Santos will continue in the doubles quarterfinals, taking on the Texas A&M duo of Stancu and Hristov at 3:30 p.m. Borthwick and Cartwright will play a pair of USTA juniors in the doubles consolation bracket at 5 p.m.
