FSU Ready for Clemson

Feb. 28, 2013

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. –  For the second time in school history, the men’s and women’s tennis teams will play matches at the same time at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center. The 16th-ranked Florida State women will host No. 23 Clemson while the 44th-ranked FSU men will welcome No. 15 Texas at 3 p.m.

“It’s going to be packed,” head coach Jennifer Hyde said. “With the men and women playing together, it’s a great community event and the student-athletes love it. It’s going to be a pretty electric environment with a lot of support. It’s going to be great for both the men and the women.”

The Seminoles are coming off an upsetting 4-3 win over No. 11 Miami, where sophomore Daneika Borthwick (No.37) delivered the final point after a comeback win on court one.  After she climbed out of a 2-5 deficit in the third to take the match 7-5, 4-6, 7-6 (3), Borthwick was named the ACC Player of the Week for the second time this season.

After the victory, the Seminoles moved to 8-1 on the year, marking the best start to a spring season since 2008.

Seniors Amy Sargeant and Francesca Segarelli take 11-match winning streaks into the contest, looking to become the only women in Florida State history to win 12 matches in-a-row.  The school record for the longest winning streak was set in 1999 by Marina Rainc and Kia Asberg who had runs of 15 wins.

Florida State is 8-21 against the Tigers in the all-time series with its last victory coming in 2001.

“Clemson is the one team that we haven’t beaten since I’ve been here at FSU,” Hyde said. “Every time we step on court with them we certainly have something to play for.  There’s a little extra intensity heading into Friday with wanting to get that win.”

Clemson boasts a 3-4 record, while fielding three ranked singles players in Yana Korleva (No. 27), Anne-Liz Jeukeng (No. 29) and Beatrice Gumulya (No. 44).

The “Blackout” event will start with men’s and women’s doubles on the same side before separating on to north and south sides by team for singles.

The first 50 fans to the event will receive a coupon for free Piggy’s BBQ, while the first 100 fans will be rewarded a free t-shirt.
