FSU Rebounds For 11-2 Win Over Evansville

Game 5 – FSU 11, Evansville 2

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida State’s Scott Boyd went 3-4 with five RBI’s and
a homerun as the Seminoles advanced to Sunday’s championship game with UCF
with a decisive 11-2 victory over Evansville on Saturday evening in Game 5
of the NCAA Baseball Tallahassee Regional at Dick Howser Stadium. FSU goes
to 47-15 on the season with Evansville finishing at 41-22.

Evansville didn’t waste any time getting runs on the board as catcher Matt
Serafini hit a two-run home run off the scoreboard net in the first inning.
The Seminoles answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the
first. Chris Smith led off with a walk and went on to score on an error by
the Purple Aces’ third baseman Ryan Connors. A sacrifice fly from Karl
Jernigan brought home John-Ford Griffin, who reached on a base hit to right

FSU broke open the game with three runs in each of the third and fourth
innings. Smith led off with the first of four base hits for the Tribe in
the third inning. Griffin reached on a fielder’s choice and Smith was safe
at second due to another Evansville error. Marshall McDougall’s infield hit
loaded the bases for Boyd, who drove in two runs with a single to left
field. McDougall went on to score on a fielder’s choice by John Halliday.
With one out in the fourth, the Seminoles put together five straight hits,
including two doubles and a triple. Smith doubled to right field, but was
called out at third in an attempt to stretch the hit into a triple. Griffin
hit a double to right and went to third on another infield base hit by
McDougall. Boyd drove in Griffin for his third RBI of the game while
Jernigan blasted a triple off the top of the wall in left center to score

The Seminoles took a 9-2 lead when Griffin recorded his third hit and scored
his fourth run of the game with a solo home run to right to lead off the
sixth inning. Boyd followed with his fourth and fifth RBIs of the night in
the eighth inning with a two-run homer over the scoreboard to give FSU the
11-2 win. Griffin went 4-5 from the plate with Jernigan going 3-4 with two
RBI. Serafini recorded the only two RBIs for the Purple Aces with his
homerun in the first inning.

Seminole pitcher Matt Lynch went to 7-0 with the win, tying his career high
with eight strikeouts and pitched eight innings. Evansville’s Preston
Larrison took the loss, going to 7-4 on the season and giving up six runs
(two earned). Relief pitcher Steve Obenchain threw five strikeouts in two
