TALLAHASSE, Fla. – The Florida State sand volleyball team hosts Georgia State in a fall exhibition from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday at the Sand Volleyball Complex.
The Seminoles’ squad will feature 13 sand-only players in addition to indoor volleyball redshirts Leah Mikesky and Sarah Burrington. The Panthers are beginning their first season of sand volleyball.
Florida State went 15-0 in the regular season a year ago in sand volleyball’s inaugural campaign as a collegiate sport. The Noles were one of four teams invited to compete at the AVCA National Championships where they finished third.
Aurora Newgard and Stepanova earned All-America honors.
Newgard and Pardon are expected to lead the Garnet and Gold in its second season along with a strong freshmen class and five other sand-only returners, including captains (along with Newgard) Mallory Kiley and Amanda Saxton. The team is expected to add a few Seminole indoor volleyball players in the spring.
“We’re so much more prepared now,” head coach Danaless Corso said. “We’re really looking forward to the season. We have seven new players and two indoor freshmen. For some of our players, it’s the first beach volleyball tournament of their life this weekend. It’s very important for them to get used to the format and how to warm-up. It’s different that practice. We’re hoping they compete as well as they practice. The returners have been amazing, too.”
