FSU Sand Volleyball Takes Second

March 17, 2012

LOS ANGELES – Led by the No. 2 tandem of junior Aurora Newgard and sophomore Brittany Tiegs, the Florida State sand volleyball team finished second in the team competition on Saturday during day two of USC’s three-day, four-team tournament held at Santa Monica’s Annenberg Community Beach House.

Pepperdine won the team title with 18 points in the double elimination flight play, while the Seminoles followed with 12. USC and Long Beach state each scored 10 points.

All four schools had one of its five pairs teams in each of the five flights, with all of the No. 1 teams grouped together and all of the similarly ranked teams in the same flights, as well.

Newgard and Tiegs survived unfavorable rainy and windy weather conditions as well as any duo in the tournament. The tandem picked up a pair of three-set wins over USC’s Katie Fuller and Natalie Hagglund (19-21, 21-17, 15-12) and Pepperdine’s Lilla Frederick and Kim Hill (21-17, 13-21, 15-12), before claiming the No. 2 flight championship with a 21-19, 21-9 victory over Frederick and Hill again.

“Brittany and Aurora figured it out today,” volunteer assistant coach Brian Corso said. “The team that was able to make the adjustments to the weather today was going to get the win and they were able to do that. We had a great day overall. We were battling the weather as well as the opponent.”

Saturday’s competition lasted over six hours and featured a pair of 30-minute weather delays.

Senior Jekaterina Stepanova and freshman Jace Pardon finished second in the No. 1 flight, while the Seminole duo of senior Visnja Djurdjevic and freshman Melanie Pavels earned runner-up in the No. 3 flight.

Stepanova and Pardon finished 2-2 in their flight with both of their losses coming against Pepperdine’s top team of Catilin Racich and Summer Ross.

Djurdjevic and Pavels also tallied a 2-2 mark in their group with both losses coming to the Waves, including a hard-fought, three-set defeat to Victoria Adelhelm and Kellie Woolever.

FSU’s No. 4 team of senior Mallory Kiley and freshman Stephanie Pellitteri and No. 5 team of junior Lacey Blackman and sophomore Jeassica McGregor both finished fourth in their flights.

Sunday’s final day of play will be single elimination bracket play to crown a pairs champion among all 20 pairs teams in the tourney.

Florida State won two of the five pairs flights, while Pepperdine took the other three, during pool play on Friday. The Waves posted an overall record of 12-3 during day one. Florida State went 8-7, followed by USC at 7-8 and Long Beach State at 3-12. The results of Friday’s pool play, which saw one pairs team from each school compete randomly in each of the five pools, determined the seedings for Sunday’s bracket play.
