FSU Softball Drops Second Game of Florida State Invitational 4-2 to Kent State

March 10, 2006

After so many close calls recently, eventually Florida State’s late inning magic was going to go dry. The Seminoles scored a pair of runs in the sixth inning, but couldn’t muster any more as they dropped a 4-2 decision to Kent State in their second game of the Florida State Invitational on Friday (March 10).

FSU had its three-game winning streak snapped as it dropped to 14-8. Kent State won its first game against the Seminoles in six tries and improved to 6-4 on the year.

Freshman Melissa May (San Diego, Calif.) took the loss with her record falling to 4-4. May gave up four runs on three hits with three strikeouts in five innings of work. Kent State’s Brittany Robinson got the victory as she struck out 14 batters.

Kent State jumped out to a quick 3-0 advantage with a trio of runs in the second inning. May gave up a pair of doubles and a walk to start the frame and all three of those runners came around to score. May was relieved temporarily in the second by Tiffany McDonald (Belfair, Wash.).

The Seminole bats were quieted for most of the night by Robinson, who took a no hitter into the fifth inning. With two outs in the fifth, May roped a triple to the gap in right center to break up the no hitter.

Florida State didn’t get its first runs of the game until the sixth inning. Short stop Yuruby Alicart (Maracay, Venezuela) doubled off the wall in left field and scored on a single by Carly Brieske (Safety Harbor, Fla.). Brieske moved up to second on a throwing error then advanced to third on a ground out. Kent State appeared to be out of the inning on a ground ball by Michelle Snyder (Wenatchee, Wash.) but the throw from the short stop was in the dirt, allowing Brieske to score.

Unfortunately for the Seminoles they couldn’t keep Kent State off the board in the bottom of the sixth as Jamie Fitzpatrick hit a solo home run to make it a 4-2 game.

The Seminoles wrap up pool play at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday (March 11) when they take on Western Illinois. Pairings in the Gold and Silver brackets will be announced after the 12:30 games.
