FSU Softball Earns 7-0 Victory Over FAMU

April 12, 2000

TALLAHASSEE, Fla.– Florida State sophomore pitcher Leslie Malerich recorded
her 10th shutout of the year as the Lady Seminole softball team improved to
33-23 with a 7-0 victory over Florida A&M Wednesday night at the Rattlerette
Softball Complex. FAMU fell to 26-28 on the year. The win was FSU’s fifth
overall and third shutout over FAMU this season
Florida State scored two runs in the second inning, but the only hits in the
inning were by the FAMU pitcher. Rattlerette pitcher Tenyse Tasby hit two
batters and walked two others, scoring Felicia Williams and Becky Brock. In
the FSU third, the Tribe made up for the lack of hits the inning before,
scoring four runs off of four hits. With one out, Kelly Miller singled to
right field and Natalie Bennett followed with a base hit up the middle.
Andi Lyons walked to load the bases and Becky Brock struck out. Back to the
top of the order, Staci Brandon singled to center scoring two runs and
Serita Brooks’ base hit scored another. With Lyons on third base, Brooks
stole second and Lyons scored on the throw to second. FSU picked up another
run in the seventh as Bennett reached on a walk, advanced to third on a
sacrifice by Lyons and scored on a fielder’s choice by Jackie Hirschfeld.

Malerich was solid on the mound in the two-hit complete game outing. She
improved to 21-12 on the year. Tasby fell to 13-19 and Amber Alford
pitched the final three innings in relief. Brandon led FSU with three RBIs
on the night.

“This was a good win for us,” FSU Head Coach Dr. JoAnne Graf said. “After
we got the early lead, we were able to play a lot of different players and
that’s important, especially with a big ACC series this weekend. Leslie
(Malerich) did a great job pitching for us and our defense played much
better tonight.”

The Lady Seminoles will entertain Auburn in a doubleheader on Saturday,
April 15th beginning at 1 p.m. Atlantic Coast Conference-foe North Carolina
visits the Seminole Softball Complex on Sunday, April 16th for two games
starting at 1 p.m. The UNC series will be aired on Sunshine Network.
