COLUMBUS, Ga. – The Lady Seminole softball team finished 1-1 on the first
day of the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Leadoff Classic in
Columbus, Ga. FSU fell to #5 Fresno State 2-0 and defeated Harvard 6-2.
In the first game of the day, Florida State and Fresno State remained
scoreless until the 7th inning when Fresno’s Lovie Jung hit a two run single
to centerfield to give the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead and the win. Pitcher Leslie
Malerich went the complete game, giving up only one earned run while
striking out five and walking two.
Kimmy Carter started the scoring for FSU against Harvard, coming in on a
Harvard error with Teresa Edenfield adding a single RBI to give the Lady
Seminoles the 2-0 lead. Harvard answered in the 4th scoring two on
two-single RBI’s to tie the game at 2-2 before Edenfield drove in Brandi
Stuart and Natalie Bennett on a single and Becky Wallace brought in
Edenfield to give FSU the 5-2 lead in the 6th. Bennett then hit a single to
centerfield to bring in Rita Brooks, giving FSU the 6-2 win. Edenfield led
the team, going 2-3 from the plate and adding three RBI’s as Bennett also
went 2-3 with one RBI. Pitcher Jen White-Stokes went the complete game,
striking out three batters and walking none.
Florida State is 15-5 on the season. The Lady Seminoles will face Texas at
10:00am on Saturday in the NFCA Classic before beginning bracket play
Saturday night and Sunday.
