FSU Softball Hosts In-State Rival Florida

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Lady Seminoles will host rival-Florida in a doubleheader on Wednesday,
April 5th, beginning at 4 p.m. Next weekend, the Tribe will welcome
Southern Miss and FAMU for the FSU Tri-Header, April 8th and 9th. The
schedule is:

April 81 pm – FSU vs. Southern Miss
3 pm – FAMU vs. Southern Miss
5 pm – FSU vs. FAMU

COACH’S CORNER
Dr. JoAnne Graf is in her 22nd season at the helm of the Lady Seminole
program. Her record stands at 1033-305-6. In 1999, Graf became the first
coach in NCAA Division I history to amass 1,000 Division I victories and
the first to reach that plateau at one university. She has guided FSU to
five College World Series, 12 NCAA Regional appearances, two slowpitch
National Championships and seven ACC Championships. Her coaching has
produced 17 All-Americans and numerous all-region and all-conference
selections.


SOME WERE STILL SOLID
Despite winning just one of four games over the weekend, there were some
impressive individual performances. Serita Brooks batted .636 on 7-for-11
with one RBI. Brandi Stuart batted .462 on 6-of-13 with four RBIs while
Teresa Edenfield also drove in four runs. FSU was a perfect 6-for-6 in
stolen bases


APRIL FOOL’S DAY BUT NO JOKE
The Lady Seminoles committed a season-high seven errors in their 8-2 loss
to Georgia Tech on April 1st. In fact, the team struggled defensivley all
weekend with 14 errors in four games.


THE SERIES WITH THE GATORS
Florida State and Florida have split their six meetings since the Gators
brought back softball in 1997. In each of the past three seasons, UF has
won the first game of the doubleheader while FSU has won the second game.

TOO MANY HITS
FIU ripped off 10 hits in the first game of the doubleheader with Florida
State on Sunday. It was the first time this season that an opponent has
recorded double-digit hits in a game.


YOU ARE MY SUNSHINE
Sunshine Network will broadcast the North Carolina series on April 16th.
The ACC Softball Tournament championship game on Monday, May 1st will also
be aired on Sunshine.


MALERICH EARNS ACC HONORS AGAIN
Malerich earned ACC Pitcher of the Week honors for the fourth time this
season on March 27. Malerich went 4-0 for the week, including two
shutouts, with a 0.54 ERA and one save. With a 3-0 record and a save in
the UTC Frost Cutlery Challenge, she was named to the All-Tournament team
and earned MVP honors. Malerich held opponents to a .172 batting average,
allowing just two runs in 26 innings of work on the mound. She made five
appearances for the week, with four starts and three complete games. She
walked just six batters while striking out 21.


MORE ALL TOURNAMENT HONORS
The Lady Seminoles were well represented on the UTC Frost Cutlery Challenge
All-Tournament Team. Joining Malerich, who also earned MVP honors, were
Becky Wallace, Brandi Stuart and Teresa Edenfield. Wallace batted .462
with two RBIs. Stuart batted .353 with three runs and three RBIs while
Edenfield batted .316 with four RBIs.


COME-FROM-BEHIND
Florida State showed some real fight against Wisconsin in the final day of
the UTC Frost Cutlery Challenge. Down 5-0 after two innings, the Tribe
scored two runs in the fourth and then exploded for four runs on five hits
in the seventh inning. After giving up five runs in the second inning,
Jenn White-Stokes allowed just three Badger hits the next four innings and
Leslie Malerich came into the game in the seventh to earn the save.


THE LADY SEMINOLES IN ACC STATS

  • Serita Brooks ranks second in the ACC in batting with a .412 BA
  • Leslie Malerich’s 0.94 ERA is second in the ACC.
  • Leslie Malerich is averaging 6.13 strikeouts per game which is third-best
    in the ACC.

  • Heading into the week, Teresa Edenfield’s team-leading 32 RBIs ranks
    fourth in the ACC.

  • Kimmy Carter leads FSU and is tied for first in the ACC with five triples.
  • Serita Brooks leads FSU and the ACC with 30 stolen bases.
  • Leslie Malerich leads the ACC with two saves and is fourth in winning
    percentage at .607.

THE BATS WOKE UP!
Florida State belted a season-high 13 hits in the first game of the
doubleheader vs. Ohio. It marked the seventh time this season that the
Lady Seminoles have recorded double digit hits in a game and the Tribe is
7-0 in those games. On the flip side, FSU pitching has not allowed an
opponent to record double-digit hits this season.


INSIDE THE PARK
Junior Serita Brooks used her speed to round the bases for her second home
run of the season vs. Ohio, but first in-the-park home run. It is the
second in-the-park home run for the Lady Seminoles this season as Jen
White-Stokes recorded one vs. FAMU on February 12th.


MULTI-BROOKS
Serita Brooks leads the team with 20 multi-hit games this season. The
junior also has four multi-RBI games on the year. She also put together a
hitting streak of 10 games between Feb. 16-27th.


ALL-TOURNAMENT HONORS
Juniors Staci Brandon and Serita Brooks were named to the 2000 Tallahassee
Democrat Florida State Invitational All-Tournament team over the weekend.
Brandon led all FSU players with a .750 batting average on 9-of-12 at the
plate with two RBIs and three runs scored. Brooks hit .529 on 9-of-17,
including a double and a triple, and scored two runs and drove in three
others.


EDENFIELD CAME BACK STRONG
Senior Teresa Edenfield missed the majority of the FSU Invitational with a
sprained left knee. She saw one at bat in the five games and it was a hit
against Northern Iowa. Edenfield returned to action on Wednesday, March
22nd and played in all eight of FSU’s games that week and what a week she
had! Playing in all eight games, she batted .346 with nine hits, including
two doubles, and a team-leading seven RBIs.


HOME RUN CLUB
The Lady Seminoles already have 13 home runs this season while FSU pitching
has allowed just five. The Tribe had a total of seven last season. Kelly
Miller and Teresa Edenfield lead the team with three apiece while Kimmy
Carter and Serita Brooks each have two, and Brandi Stuart, Natalie Bennett
and Jenn White-Stokes each have one.


PERFECTION!
Leslie Malerich faced 21 batters and threw five strikeouts against
Princeton for her first career perfect game at FSU! It was also her sixth
shut out of the season.


PITCHER OF THE WEEK … AGAIN!
Leslie Malerich earned ACC Pitcher of the Week honors on Monday, March 20th
after recording her first career perfect game and earning two victories the
past week It is the third time this season that Malerich has been
recognized by the league.


BROOKS HONORED
Junior Serita Brooks was named to the Fresno State Hallowell Chevrolet
All-Tournament team after batting .474 with two RBI’s and going a perfect
4-4 in stolen bases.


TEAM LEADER
Serita Brooks, a transfer from North Florida CC, has quickly made a name
for herself. The Cottondale, Ala., native leads the team in batting at
.394, hits with 56 and stolen bases with 28. She has also earned ACC
Player of the Week honors once this season.


KEY HITS
Drake University transfer Natalie Bennett has just 30 hits on the season
and they have been key ones because the shortstop ranks second on the team
with 22 RBIs off those hits!


ON THE BASEPATHS
The Lady Seminoles have some speed in the line up. Serita Brooks leads the
team with 30 stolen bases, while Brandi Stuart has 21. As a team, FSU has
recorded 76 stolen bases to its opponents’ 24.


TOO CLOSE FOR COMFORT
The Lady Seminoles are 29-20 heading into this week’s action. Ten of the
Tribe’s 20 losses have been by just one run and four of those games went
extra innings before being decided.


COMPLEX RECORDS
Two records were tied or broken during the Seminole Classic, February
11-13. The Cal-Berkeley Bears tied the record for team RBI’s with 10 and
set a new record for runs by one team in a game with 14 against FAMU on Feb
12. The Tribe committed a complex record seven errors vs. Georgia Tech on
April 1st.


EXTRA INNINGS
The Lady Seminoles are 2-4 in extra inning games this season.


TWICE AS NICE
Leslie Malerich won her second consecutive ACC pitcher of the week award
for the week of February 21st. For the week, she compiled a 5-0 record
while not allowing a run in 21 1/3 innings of work. She has not went 28 1/3
consecutive innings before allowing a run and has 96 strikeouts in 97
innings pitched.


STREAKY SEMINOLES
The Lady Seminoles won eight straight games during a 10-day stretch from
Feb. 16-26th. The Tribe also lost eight straight during a seven-day
stretch from March 4-11th.


SHUTTING ‘EM OUT!
Florida State pitching has produced 15 shutouts this season, including a
no-hitter against Florida A&M and a perfect game against Princeton. Leslie
Malerich leads the unit with eight solo and two combined shutouts.


BROOKS NAMED ACC PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Serita Brooks earned the ACC Player of the Week honors on February 28.
Brooks batted .615 on 8-of-13 hitting at the FAU Tournament. On the week,
she scored five runs and drove in three others.

On the Season:
Has played in 35 games with 25 starts, mostly at left field… ranks second
on the team with a .346 batting average… had a seven-game hitting
streak… has recorded seven multi-hit games, including a perfect 3-for-3
vs. Miami of Ohio on March 17th… was named to the Florida State
Invitational All-Tournament team after batting .750, with two RBIs and
three runs scored… is 6-for-6 in stolen bases.


#2 Becky Brock

On the Season:
Sees a lot of action at third base… has played in 40 games… is third on
the team at .304, but has just 23 At Bats… has one multi-hit and
multi-RBI game… is solid defensively… is also used occasionally as a
pinch-runner.


#3 Felicia Williams
Sr. – OF – Orlando, FL

On the Season:
Has played in 41 games… is third on the team with seven stolen bases…
has one multi-hit game… has one multi-steal game with two vs.
Bethune-Cookman on Feb. 19.


#8 Kimmy Carter

Starter at right field… is hitting .250… is among the team-leaders with
two home runs… has started in all 49 games… leads the team with five
triples… has two, three-RBI games… had a six-game hitting streak… has
eight multi-hit… is fourth on the team with 31 hits… is first on the

#10 Andi Lyons

On the Season:
Primary starter at catcher… has played in 40 games this season… started
the year with a four-game hitting streak… has one multi-hit game and one

On the Season:
Strong hitting pitcher… is 10-8 with a 2.42 ERA and 11 complete games…
is batting .226… hit an inside-the-park home run vs. FAMU on Feb. 12…
has four shutouts… has held opponents to a .241 batting average… threw
a one-hitter with nine strikeouts against Miami of Ohio on March 17… has
three multi-hit games and one three-RBI game… started the season with a

#14 Teresa Edenfield

Has started in 44 games, at catcher, at DH and at left field… leads the
team with 32 RBIs… has had five, three-RBI games this season, the latest
against Florida International on April 2… tied for the team lead with
three home runs and is second on the squad with eight doubles… was named
to the UTC Frost Cutlery All-Tournament Team… is third on the team with
33 hits… had a season-high 10 putouts against Florida Atlantic in the
Lady Seminole Classic.. has had eight multi-hit games… was injured and
had just one at bat, for a hit, at the Florida State Invitational… has
already surpassed season-high of 16 RBIs in 1998.


#15 Serita Brooks
Jr. – CF – Cottondale, AL

On the Season:
Starter in center field… junior college transfer who is quickly making a
name for herself… leads the team and is second in the ACC with a .412
batting average… also the team leader in hits with 63 and stolen bases
with 30… is fourth on the team with 17 RBIs… was named to the
All-Tournament Teams at both the Fresno State Tournament and the
Tallahassee Democrat Florida State Invitational… batted .529 in the
Invitational with a double, triple, two runs scored and three Rbis… had
hits in the first seven games of the season… longest hitting streak has
been 10 games… is the team-leader with 20 multi-hit games… has two home
runs, vs. Villanova and an inside-the-park blast vs. Ohio… has recorded
three steals in a game, three times this season… earned ACC Player of the
Week honors on February 28th.


#17 Becky Wallace
Sr. – 1B – Naples, FL

On the Season:
Has played in 37 games at designated hitter or at first base… leads the
team with 276 putouts for a .983 fielding percentage… is batting .204…
went 3-for-3 against Bethune-Cookman on Feb. 19… has three multi-hit
games… has one multi-RBI game vs. Northern Iowa on March 18… had a
hitting streak of three games at the start of the season… earned UTC
Frost Cutlery Challenge All-Tournament Team honors.


#23 Leslie Malerich
So. – P – Merrillville, IN

On the Season:
FSU’s ace on the mound… is the team leader with a 17-11 record and a 0.94
ERA… leads the FSU pitching staff with 150 strikeouts and eight
shutouts… has been named the ACC Pitcher of the Week four times… was
named to the UTC Frost Cutlery Challenge All-Tournament Team and also
earned MVP honors after notching three wins, including two shutouts, and a
save… recorded her first career perfect game against Princeton on March
15… also had a no-hitter vs. FAMU… has 19 complete games… struck out
season-high 11 batters vs. FAMU on Feb. 12… had a stretch where she
didn’t give up an earned run in 46 consecutive innings… has held the
opposition to a .174 batting average.


#24 Jackie Hirschfeld
So. – 3B – Tampa, FL

On the Season:
Has played in 13 games with three starts… recorded lone-hit vs. Mercer on
Feb. 16th…Is fielding 1.000 in limited playing time.


#25 Robyn Gauger
Jr. – P/UT – St. Mark’s, FL

On the Season:
Has made 11 appearances and is 2-1 with one shutout and one save… is
second on the pitching staff with a 1.53 ERA…. struck out a season-high
seven batters in her season debut vs. Mercer on February 16…Pitched her
second complete game in win vs. Florida International on April 2… also
has 19 At Bats and has one hit and one run scored.


#29 Brandi Stuart
Fr. – 2B – Cerritos, CA

On the Season:
Starter at second base… is third on the team with a .319 batting
average… is second on the team with 21 stolen bases, 46 hits and 144 At
Bats… has 14 multi-hit games… is one of five Lady Seminoles with double
digit RBIs with 21… is second on the team with 13 walks… is third on
the team with 19 runs… has four multi-steal games… went 3-for-4,
including a triple, with two RBIs vs. Ohio on March 22… was named to the
UTC Frost Cutlery Challenge All Tournament Team… is one of just four
player to start every game…Had a six game hitting streak snapped in game
1 vs. Florida Atlantic…Had three RBI’s vs. Florida Atlantic on April 2.
