March 25, 2000

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – The Florida State softball team went to 26-17 on the
season with a 3-0 win over Wisconsin and a 6-2 loss to No. 15
Louisiana-Lafayette on Saturday in the second day of action at the UTC Frost
Cutlery Challenge.

The Tribe started the scoring in the Wisconsin contest with two runs in the
second inning. Kelly Miller led off the inning with a single to left field
and Brandi Stuart brought her home with a triple to center field. Stuart
scored on a deep sacrifice fly to left by Natalie Bennett. FSU extended its
lead to 3-0 when Becky Wallace drove in Stuart with a two-out single to
right field in the fourth inning. On the mound, Leslie Malerich got herself
out of an early second-inning jam, striking out Wisconsin’s Kerry Hagen with
the bases loaded and gave up two hits in the fifth, but Wisconsin stranded
two runners in the inning. Malerich gave up six hits and struck out five in
her 16th complete game. She improves to 16-9 and records her eighth shutout
of the year.

The Lady Cajuns scored three runs off of three hits in the first inning and
shortstop Alana Addison belted a home run over the right field fence in the
second, giving La.-Lafayette a 4-0 lead. FSU starter Jenn White-Stokes was
pulled after the blast and Robyn Gauger came into the game in relief.
Florida State scored a run in the bottom of the second when Bennett led off
with a double and was driven in by Andi Lyons’ single to center field, buy
the Lady Seminoles stranded four runners in the first two innings. A solo
home run by Louisiana pitcher Micah
Barbato in the fourth gave the Lady Cajuns a 5-1 advantage. The Tribe
picked up another run in the fifth and despite threatening in the seventh
inning with two on and one out, the Lady Seminoles did not score in the
final two innings. UL scored another run in the seventh for the four-run
victory. White-Stokes falls to 9-7 on the season. For FSU, Kimmy Carter
went 2-for-3 to lead the team at the plate.

“Leslie (Malerich) really settled in and pitched a great game against
Wisconsin and the team responded offensively,” FSU Head Coach Dr. JoAnne
Graf said. “Jenn (White-Stokes) had a rough start against Louisiana and we
let them get that early lead and never quite recovered. We hit the ball,
but couldn’t drive in the runs.”

Action at the Frost Challenge concludes on Sunday, March 26th. FSU will
play Wisconsin at 2 p.m. and UTC at 4 p.m.
