April 2, 2000

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida State softball team
went to 29-20 on the season with a split with Florida International at the
Seminole Softball Complex on Sunday afternoon. FSU fell 4-2 in the first
game and responded with an 8-3 victory in game two. FIU goes to 31-21 on
the year.

The Lady Seminoles continued to struggled offensively in
game one, recording just two runs on six hits. Both teams scored a run in
each of the first two innings. FIU scored its first run off of three base
hits in the first inning. Shannon Carey’s single with two out scored
leadoff hitter Stephanie Wolter. Florida State responded with an unearned
run in the bottom of the inning as Kimmy Carter reached on an error,
advanced to third on a Teresa Edenfield single and scored on an error on
the play. With two out in the second inning, FIU’s Kelly Nicosa reached
base on an error, loading the bases, and Wolter drew a walk, scoring a run.
FSU’s Natalie Bennett tied the game up with a solo home run over the left
field fence in the bottom of the second inning, but the Tribe would manage
just three more hits the rest of the game. The Golden Panthers took the
lead in the fourth inning with two runs off three hits. Laura Lambert
scored on a wild pitch while Monica Pardo’s single to center field scored
Nicosia. Leslie Malerich recorded the loss and falls to 17-11 overall
while FIU’s Mila Nelson improves to 11-10. For FSU, Serita Brooks had
three of the team’s six hits while FIU’s Wolter also went 3-for-4 and
scored a run. As a team, FIU had 10 hits – the most given up by an FSU
pitcher this season.

Florida International got on the board early again in game
two. In the second inning, Pardo led off with a double to left, advanced to
third on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Shannon Carey. The FSU
defense committed two errors in the fourth inning which resulted in another
FIU run. The Golden Panthers had two hits in the inning and Pardo scored
on a fielder’s choice by Sabrina Smith. The Lady Seminoles had base
runners in each of the first four innings, but didn’t score until the fifth
inning. After two quick outs, both Staci Brandon and Brooks drew walks and
Brandi Stuart loaded the bases with a single to center field. FSU
RBI-leader Teresa Edenfield hit the ball sharply past the pitcher into
center field, bringing home two runs. Florida State exploded for six runs
off of four hits in the bottom of the sixth inning. Stuart’s triple to
right field scored three runs while Brandon, Brooks and Edenfield each
recorded RBI singles. FIU committed two errors in the inning. FIU scored
one run in the seventh as Crystal Boyer doubled to lead off the inning and
pinch-runner Meagan Duntrich later scored on an error. Robyn Gauger earns
the victory and goes to 2-1 on the year while FIU’s Auburn Sigurdson falls
to 13-5. Both Stuart and Edenfield recorded three RBIs for FSU.

“We finally hit the ball like we are capable of at the end
of the second game,” FSU Head Coach Dr. JoAnne Graf said. “It was good to
get the win, but we need to work on being a more consistent team in every
area of the game.”

The Lady Seminoles will host rival-Florida on Wednesday,
April 5th in a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m. at the Seminole Softball
