FSU Softball Splits With Florida

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida State freshman Brandi Stuart’s
seventh inning grand slam in the first game of the doubleheader with the
Florida Gators gave the Lady Seminoles a 6-3 win but Florida recovered to
take game two, 5-3, in eight innings in action at the Seminole Softball
Complex. FSU’s record goes to 30-21 while the Gators go to 31-17 on the

In game one, Florida scored first with two runs in the second
inning. Jennifer Lutsi and Ashley Boone led off the inning reaching base
on a walk and a double. Andrea Zimbardi’s sacrifice bunt scored Lutsi
while Boone scored on a ground out by Jennifer Cordero. The Lady Seminoles
threatened in the first inning as Brandi Stuart ripped a triple to center
field with two out, but she was left stranded. In the FSU fourth, Teresa
Edenfield reached on a single and advanced to third on a ground out by
Kelly Miller. With two out, Kimmy Carter’s deep single to center scored
Edenfield. Florida scored another run in the sixth. Jennifer Mossadeghi
reached on an error to lead off the inning and pinch runner Jennifer Brown
later scored on another error. FSU would commit three errors and a wild
pitch in the inning. In the FSU seventh, the Lady Seminoles loaded the
bases with hits from Becky Wallace and Staci Brandon and a walk to Natalie
Bennett. Serita Brooks walked, scoring one run and then Stuart came up to
the plate. Ten pitches later and with the count 3-2, Stuart drilled a
grand slam home run over the left field fence for the 6-2 win. Leslie
Malerich, who allowed just three hits, earned the victory and improved to
18-11 while UF ace Beth Dieter fell to 14-6. FSU outhit the Gators 8-3.

In the second game, Florida led off the first and fourth innings
with hits and scored runs in both innings. In the first, Lora Pinkerton
singled and went to third on a sacrifice. She was driven in by Emily
Marino. In the fourth, Marino led off with a double and pinch runner
Jennifer Brown stole third. Lutsi’s single to center scored Brown. FSU
scored its first run in the fourth when Serita Brooks led off with a triple
to center field and was driven in by game-one hero, Brandi Stuart’s
sacrifice fly. The Lady Seminoles tied the game in the sixth but the
go-ahead run was called out at the plate. Andi Lyons led off the inning
with a walk and then Staci Brandon and Serita Brooks notched singles to
load the bases. With two out, Kelly Miller singled to right field, scoring
Felicia Williams, who was pinch-running for Lyons, but the throw beat
Brandon at the plate. In the eighth inning, UF scored three runs off of
three hits, started by a double by Mossadeghi. Marino, Andrea Zimbardi and
Nicole Kreipl also recorded RBI’s in the inning. FSU threatened in the
bottom of the eight as Andi Lyons led off with a double and scored on an
error, but the Tribe managed just one run. Robyn Gauger fell to 2-2 with
the loss while UF’s Nicole Michael improved to 5-3 and Renise Landry earned
her second save.

“The first game, Brandi Stuart was just on fire,” FSU Head Coach
Dr. JoAnne Graf said. “She (Brandi) was the hero of the day. She hit the
ball hard each time in both games. I knew right when she hit the ball, it
was gone and I thought the momentum of the grand slam would carry over into
the second game.”

Florida State will host Southern Miss and FAMU in the FSU
Tri-Header this weekend, April 8th and 9th, at the Seminole Softball
