TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Lady Seminole softball team ended the celebration of 30 years of women’s intercollegiate athletics with a sweep of Florida International this afternoon at the Seminole Softball Complex. FSU won the first 6-1 and took the second game 1-0 in the eighth inning.
The Lady Seminole softball team joined the soccer team, alumni, administration, friends and guests in the official opening of the Seminole Soccer/Softball Complex and in celebrating 30 years of women’s intercollegiate athletics. The festivities, which began in the fall, ended with the spring celebration today, including the ribbon cutting and honoring former athletes and staff in a luncheon and recognition at the softball and baseball game today.
“The wins were a perfect way to end the day,” Head Coach Dr. JoAnne Graf said.”I think the ladies wanted to win these even more because of all the alumni that came back to see them and see our new facility. We’ve had a great celebration and this was just a good way to end it.”
Teresa Edenfield started the scoring for FSU in the first game with an RBI single which brought in Jesse McGregor. Florida International answered in the second inning with a double to centerfield but the Lady Seminoles came back and scored three runs in the third inning off of a double RBI from McGregor and two Golden Panther errors. Danielle Cox drove in a run in the fourth inning and McGregor added a triple RBI in the sixth inning to give the Lady Seminoles the 6-1 win. McGregor led the team, going 3-4 with a double and a triple. Edenfield and Dana Bailey both went 2-3 and Bailey and Cox added two stolen bases a piece. Stacy Venable pitched the complete game, improving to 10-1, striking out five batters and giving up two hits and one run.
The two teams remained scoreless after seven innings in the second game but Jackie Hirschfeld changed that in the bottom of the eigth as she pinched hit and drove in Tami Post, clinching the 1-0 win for the Lady Seminoles.
