DELAND, Fla. – The Florida State softball team made it six wins
in a row with a 2-0 and 8-2 sweep over Stetson Sunday afternoon at the
Sperling Sports Complex. The victories improve Florida State’s record to
11-3, while the Hatters fall to 4-6 on the year.
Sophomore pitcher Leslie Malerich earned both victories for the
Seminoles, improving her record to 9-1, with a complete game shutout in the
first contest and 3.1 innings of work in relief in game two in which she
allowed just one hit and struck out five. She allowed just five hits and
struck out seven in game one.
Sophomore Kimmy Carter led the squad with two hits in the first
game, but it was Becky Wallace’s RBI single in the fourth inning that
scored Rita Brooks, giving the Seminoles a 1-0 lead. In the FSU fifth,
Carter singled to lead off the inning and later scored on a wild pitch.
A six-run seventh inning for the Seminoles broke a 2-2 tie in the
second game. Florida State had five hits in the inning and two runs scored
on Stetson errors. Brooks went 2-for-3 for the game and scored two runs as
five different players had RBIs for the Tribe.
“We played real well as a team in the first game,” FSU Head Coach
Dr. JoAnne Graf said. “We didn’t break things open until the seventh
inning in the second game, but we were able to string some hits together
and get the win. We played great defense all weekend and I just can’t say
enough about the jobs Leslie Malerich and Robyn Gauger did for us on the
The Seminoles will travel to Boca Raton, Fla., next weekend to
participate in the Florida Atlantic Tournament, February 26-27.
