May 6, 2002

Greensboro, NC –
Florida State sophomore Jessica van der Linden was named ACC Player of the Week for the second time this season Monday. The Cerritos, CA native went a perfect 2-0 on the mound versus Virginia and Troy state with a 0.00 ERA and a complete game. She also hit .364 with four RBIs and scored two runs in FSU’s two doubleheaders.

In a crucial conference series versus Virginia, the sophomore started the Seminoles off on the right foot in game one. The Seminoles and Cavaliers were tied at 0-0 in the fifth inning with ACC Player of the Year candidate Kristen Dennis in the circle. Van der Linden came up with two outs and the bases loaded. The center fielder sent a deep shot to right center scoring two runs and giving FSU a 2-0 lead they would never relinquish. The game-winning RBI was the third of the year for van der Linden. In the second game of the twin bill, van der Linden took care of business as a pitcher and at the plate. She went 2-for-3 with two runs scored in the 6-3 win and pitched 6.0 innings. She allowed no earned runs as she held the Cavs to a .208 batting average, which was almost 80 percentage points below their season average.

She then turned around and had another great outing in the circle and at the plate versus a Troy State team ranked No. 7 in the South Region. In the 9-1 win, she singled in her first at bat, drove in a run on a sac fly in the third and then drove in another run with a bases loaded walk in the fourth. On the mound, she pitched a complete game three-hitter as she once again allowed no earned runs for the second time this week. In the victory over the Lady Trojans, van der Linden didn’t issue a single walk all game.

The Seminoles wrap-up regular season play versus No. 10 FAU (55-9) Tuesday, May 7 at 5:30 p.m. Florida Atlantic is currently ranked first in the South Region and is sitting one spot ahead of the second-ranked Seminoles. The 2002 senior class will be honored prior to the game versus the Owls.

Florida State opens conference tournament play Friday at 7:00 p.m. The Seminoles open up with the winner of the day’s first game between North Carolina and Virginia at 3:00 p.m. For more information on the 2002 ACC Softball Tournament including game times and ticket prices, please visit our official athletic website at www.seminoles.com.
