GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The Florida State women’s tennis team notched 3-of-4 wins in both singles and doubles play at the Bedford Cup on Thursday. The four-day event is held at the Ring Tennis Complex and is hosted by the University of Florida.
“Our seniors did a great job starting off the day,” head coach Jennifer Hyde said. “They played some very solid and fundamentally sound doubles.”
In singles, Eduarda Dos Santos picked up a win over Hailey Grillo of USF, 6-3, 7-6 (6). She advances to face the top-seeded Olivia Janowicz of Florida on Friday.
“Duda did a great job playing a complete match,” Hyde said. “She is very happy with the adjustments she made today.”
Picking up her second victory on the day, Porry won her first round match against Alexandra Lyubimova of Stetson, 6-3, 6-0 and will move on to face Mina Matsuba of Bethune-Cookman in the second round.
“Laurence served especially well today,” Hyde said. “She did a great job of playing like an upperclassmen in both of her matches today.”
Freshman Maljena Pedersen dropped her first round match to Diana Bukajeva of Stetson, 6-3, 6-2 and will play in the consolation draw in the tournament. She will face Sarah Means of Florida Gulf Coast in the second round.
Friday’s matches will start at 9 a.m. with a round of doubles before two rounds of singles.
Junior Kerrie Cartwright and Schleich will debut their singles matches on the weekend after earning first round byes. Cartwright is the fourth-seeded player in the draw and will clash with Andrea Crepso (Stetson) in the second round. As the sixth seed, Schleich will face Candela Munoz of FGCU.
In doubles, Cartwright and Pederson will play Crespo and MayaBlue Macdowell of Stetson in the second round.
