FSU Sweeps Weekend Games

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (Seminoles.com) – The Florida State softball team went 3-0 over the weekend as the Seminoles’ 2014 fall season continues. FSU took down Chipola College (9-1) on Friday night and added victories over the College of Central Florida (14-0) and the University of Georgia (6-5) on Saturday morning.

“Great job out of our kids this weekend, working on situations and executing them against some strong teams,” said head coach Lonni Alameda. “We started out slow in a couple of the games, but I was really proud of how we hung in there, made adjustments and continued to fight. Getting some our newcomers in game-like situations and seeing them perform well was great.”

On Friday night against Chipola, the Seminoles notched 13 hits, including two apiece from senior Bailey Schinella, junior Alex Kossoff and freshman Jessica Warren. Sophomore Victoria Daddis blasted a solo home run and redshirt sophomore Alex Powers also added two RBI.

In the circle, redshirt sophomore Jessica Burroughs was dominant in fanning 12 Indian batters in 5.0 innings, allowing just one hit, one walk and one run to earn the victory. Schinella pitched the final 3.0 innings of the exhibition game and allowed just one hit, one walk and recorded one strikeout.

Saturday’s twin-bill started with a matchup against the College of Central Florida. The game was kept scoreless until Florida State exploded with an eight-run third inning to put the game out of reach. All eight runs were scored with two outs in the inning and included a two-run single by redshirt sophomore Stephanie Hartness.

FSU added a run in the fourth, two in the sixth and three more in the seventh to earn the 14-0 victory over the Patriots. Powers led the team with three RBI as eleven different players had either a base hit or a run batted in.

Senior Lacey Waldrop started the game and pitched 5.0 shutout innings, limiting Central Florida to just two hits and two walks with eight strikeouts. Schinella entered in relief for the final two innings, giving up two hits, a walk and striking out four.

The final game of the weekend was between a pair of reigning conference champions as the 2014 SEC Champions from Georgia played the 2014 ACC Champion Seminoles. It was a defensive battle early on with both teams combining for just one hit in the first three innings.

Georgia took the lead in the top of the fourth off of a single and a double, both with two outs, to secure a 1-0 lead. The Bulldogs would add three more runs in the top of the fifth on three hits and an HBP.

Florida State answered back with five runs, all with two outs, in the bottom of the frame sparked by a two-run home run by Powers. Back-to-back doubles from Schinella and Daddis, as well as singles from junior Victoria East, Hartness and Kossoff put the Noles in front by a score of 5-4.

Burroughs started in the circle for the Seminoles and pitched 5.0 innings in the win. She allowed six hits, four runs and posted four strikeouts before giving way to Waldrop for the final two innings.

A solo home run from senior Maddie O’Brien extended the FSU lead to 6-4 in the sixth, but Georgia started to put together a comeback in the seventh with a leadoff double, which would score later in the inning to make it 6-5 FSU.

Waldrop ended the game with a pair of strikeouts to secure the victory for the Seminoles. She finished with 2.0 innings pitched, two hits, one run and two strikeouts against Georgia.

“We made some positive steps this weekend, but there are still things we need to improve on,” said Alameda. “I love how this team thinks and communicates and how we are continuing to grow as a program and a family. We still have a few weeks of fall ball ahead and I like the progress we are making and where we are going.”

The Seminoles will be on the road next weekend for a neutral-site doubleheader against fellow 2014 Women’s College World Series participant Louisiana on Sunday, Nov. 2. The games will be held in Gulfport, Miss., with the first game starting at 3:00 p.m. ET.
