The Florida State University men’s and women’s tennis teams placed three on this years Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Rankings for the fall. The Lady Seminoles placed one on this years fall rankings in freshman Anca Dumitrescu who stands at No. 68. The men’s squad has placed two this year in senior Xavier Luscan at No. 35 and standout sophomore Romain Jurd at No. 66.
Dumitrescu had an outstanding fall season going 7-3 with her three loses all to top ranked opponents. Anca advanced to the final match of competition in the Lady Seminole Classic before falling to No. 2 Jessica Lenhoff of Florida. In the Omni Hotels South Regional Tournament she advanced from the round of 64 to the round of 16 before falling to No. 25 Mira Radu of Mississippi.
Senior Alida Gallovits was ranked 35th in the preseason rankings, however due to injuries Gallovits was unable to compete in singles competition this fall taking here out of the fall rankings.
Luscan who was ranked No. 81 in the preseason is now ranked No. 35 after finishing with a fall record of 9-3 with all three of his three loses coming to ranked opponents. In his first match of the fall Luscan advanced to the semifinals before falling to No. 8 Brandon Wagner. He received an automatic bid into the ITA All-American Championships where he then went on to win three straight matches. In his fourth match Luscan defeated then No. 12 Phil Metz of Ohio. Metz was the highest ranked opponent to be defeated by an FSU Seminole under head coach Dwayne Hultquist.
Also placing his name in the National rankings for the men’s squad was sophomore Jurd. Jurd who has not been previously ranked stands at No. 66 after completing a fall season with a 16-4 record. In his first tournament of the fall he won the Division III Singles lower half portion of the Southern Collegiate Championships. Jurd then entered the ITA Pre-qualifier tournament where he advanced to the Qualifying round of the ITA All-American Championships.
ITA Regional rankings will be released Friday, Dec. 14th, while team rankings will be released on Tuesday, Jan. 8th.
The women’s squad will begin spring action on Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002 on their home court of Scott Speicher Tennis Center as they take on local rival FAMU at 2:00 p.m. The men’s squad will begin a spring season by hosting the Seminole Team Tournament on Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002.
