Tallahassee – During the time of the season when the Florida State track and field program is spread thin between indoor and outdoor seasons, a number of Seminoles are stepping up to ensure a smooth transition. FSU continued its outdoor season with the FAMU Relays hosted across town from March 12-13, 2004. The throwers posted four wins, two apiece on the men’s and women’s side, in addition to six second or third place finishes.
Senior Mandy Kinney (Lawrenceville, GA/Wyoming) won the shot put competition with a throw of 12.83m. Kinney, who tied for first place with her mark, added a fourth place finish in the discus throw.
Freshman Lindsey Nelson (Jacksonville, FL/Mandarin) won her second discus throw event title of the outdoor season with a throw of 46.66m, qualifying for NCAA East Regionals. Nelson, the second Seminole to qualify for regionals, came in third in the shot put competition.
Sophomore Kate Purcell (West Point, PA/Southern Illinois-Edwardsville) finished in second place in the javelin throw with a mark for 39.75m.
Sophomore John Fallone (Rochester, NY/Virginia Tech) won the shot put with a throw of 16.02m. Junior Dan Royal (Ft. Myers, FL/Ft. Myers) won the discus throw in 49.44m. Junior Marqus Johnson (Tampa, FL/Tampa Baptist) came in second behind Royal with a mark of 48.79m. Sophomore Andrew Diakos (Naples, FL/Barron Collier) threw 45.34m for third place.
Diakos, competing for the first time this season in javelin, threw 48.31m for second place.
The Seminoles host the FSU Relays from March 18-20, 2004 at the Mike Long Track Complex.
