TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Following a tough match in which it almost upended No. 5 Florida on the road Monday, the Florida State volleyball team will make the long journey to Las Cruces, NM to take part in this weekend’s New Mexico State Tournament.
Featuring the Aggies, No. 8 Illinois and the Italian National Team, the Seminoles (3-1) will compete in three matches over the course of Friday and Saturday before returning home to Tallahassee on Sunday.
Florida State played very well against a top-5 Gators team and will look to have even more success against the No. 8-ranked Illini, who are the Seminoles first matchup of the tournament on Friday at 2 p.m. EST. FSU will then play host New Mexico State Friday evening before a showdown with the Italians on Saturday.
This weekend, FSU will be aiming to continue the growth the team has already displayed in just four matches to start the year. With four senior leaders and several young players like sophomore Rachael Morgan and freshmen Duygu Duzceler and Fatma Yildirim playing lots of valuable minutes, the Seminoles have been able to blend the experienced and inexperienced very well so far in 2009.
While this weekend’s event is FSU’s second regular-season tournament of the year, it is not the team’s last. The Seminoles will head to South Florida next weekend to participate in the FIU/Miami Tournament and will then host a three-team event at home the following weekend before conference play begins.
