Tallahassee Regional
Game 6 – Florida State 6, UCF 1

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida State Junior righthanded pitcher Jon McDonald
pitched a two-hit, complete game to lead the Seminoles to a 6-1 victory over
UCF on Sunday in Game 6 of the Tallahassee Regional at Dick Howser Stadium.
With the victory, FSU improved to 48-16 and forced a Game 7 with the Golden
Knights, who fell to 43-18 with the loss.

It was a battle of the pitchers for the first four in a half innings as
there were no runs and four hits total between the two clubs. Florida State
finally broke the scoreless tie with a run in the bottom of the fifth
inning. With one out, Mike Futrell hit a double to left field and went to
third as Blair McCaleb reached base on an error by UCF third baseman Dustin
Brisson. Chris Smith drove in Futrell with a sacrifice fly to right.

UCF loaded the bases with two out in the sixth inning. Mike Myers and Rich
Wallace drew walks while Matt Bowser took first after being hit by McDonald.
Myers scored on a wild pitch by McDonald and the Golden Knights tied the
game 1-1.

In the FSU seventh, John-Ford Griffin helped the Tribe regain the lead when
he recorded his seventh RBI of the regional tournament with a base hit to
right field that drove in Futrell, who notched his second hit of the game
with a single to lead off the inning. Smith, who walked and went to third
on Griffin’s hit, scored on a wild pitch by UCF relief pitcher Zach Sutton
and the Tribe took a 3-1 lead.

The Seminoles doubled their scored with some solid hitting in the eighth
inning. Pichi Balet ripped his second double of the game to lead things off
and scored on a double by Brett Groves. Groves advanced to third on a wild
pitch and scored a single to left by Blair McCaleb. He went to second on a
single by Smith and scored on another RBI single by Griffin.

The Golden Knights went down in order in the ninth.

“There was no doubt about it, it was do or die today,” McDonald said. “If
we don’t win the first game, then we go home. You know everyone was playing
hard out there. You got to hand it to the guys who put runs on the board.”

McDonald recorded a season-high 10 strikeouts while walking just three. He
improved to 11-4. UCF starter David Rankin fell to 8-6 on the year.
Griffin went 4-for-5 with two RBI for the Tribe, who outhit UCF 13-2.
