TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Top-ranked Florida State (19-4) will look to even the season series against intra-state rival Florida (15-9) on Tuesday, March 25 in Jacksonville as the Noles and Gators meet at the Baseball Grounds for the eighth year in a row. First pitch is set for 6:00 p.m. and the game will air live on Sun Sports.
FSU is 5-2 all-time against Florida in Jacksonville as four of the last five games at the Grounds have been decided by three runs or less. In fact the last five neutral site meetings between these two teams have all been decided by three runs or less.
Last week in Gainesville, Florida defeated FSU 3-1 despite the Seminoles out hitting the Gators 9-6. It marked the first loss for the Noles this year when out hitting their opponents (14-1). Jose Brizuela tied a career-high with three hits as he was responsible for FSU’s only run of the night connecting on a solo home run in the sixth. Peter Miller suffered the loss despite pitching well allowing just two runs on three hits as he walked one and struck out five in 5.1 innings of work.
Last year in Jacksonville, Giovanny Alfonzo’s two-out RBI infield single in the bottom of the eighth was the difference in a 2-1 Florida State victory in front of an announced crowd of 9,629. Luke Weaver got the start last year in Jacksonville and went 6.0 innings allowing only one run on three hits as he walked one and struck out nine.
FSU took 2-of-3 from UF last year as the Gators avoided being swept beating the Seminoles in Tallahassee, 4-3. The Seminoles lead the all-time series 125-102-1, while Florida State is 10-8 against the Gators on neutral soil.
Tuesday marks the 229th meeting between these two schools as FSU is 29-21 over the last 50 games.
The series has been closely contested since 2008 as 16 of the 23 games during that span have been decided by three runs or less. FSU owns a record of 9-7 in those 16 games.
Since 2010, Florida State has captured three of the last four season series from the Gators – taking 3-of-4 in 2010 & 2011 and 2-of-3 in 2013. Tuesday marks the second time this year that FSU will face UF as the top-ranked team in the nation. Dating back to 2008, FSU is 1-2 against Florida when ranked No. 1 (3/18/14 – L, 1-3; 4/10/12 – L, 3-6; 4/15/08 – W, 4-2).
Peter Miller will start for the Seminoles on Tuesday night, while the Gators have yet to name a starter.
