FSU Volleyball Wins Fourth Of Its Last Six Matches Against Virginia Tech

BLACKSBURG, Va. -Senior outside hitter Andreza Santos paced the Florida State volleyball team (9-16, 7-10 ACC) with 15 kills and sophomore Makini Thompson was error free with 10 kills on 17 attempts as the Seminoles swept Virginia Tech (11-16, 6-12 ACC) with ease at Cassell Coliseum Saturday night. The Seminoles have won four of the last six outings.  Game scores were 30-14, 30-23, 30-23. 


 


While the Seminoles contributed an entire team effort, the night belonged to Thompson, who was purely spectacular.  Along with her kills, she hit .588 percent, added three block solos and reached for four digs. 


 


“Makini has developed not only into one of the top outsides in the conference, but in the region,” said FSU head coach Todd Kress.  “She’s continuing to fine-tune her shot selection and all-around net play.”


 


The Seminoles hit .301 percent and held the Hokies to a low .000 mark.  Florida State outscored Virginia Tech 62.0 – 42.0 and out-killed the opponent 50-29. 


 


“Tonight we had a good team effort,” said Kress.  “We came out and took care of business after the five-game loss to Virginia last night.  It’s nice to get another victory.”


 


Florida State never felt threatened against the Hokies.  The Seminoles recorded 16 kills compared to Tech’s six in the first game and hit out-hit them .382 to -.062.   In the second outing, FSU scored off of .314 percent of its shots and pounded out 18 kills.  Meanwhile, Virginia Tech tallied 11 kills and hit .094 percent.  Tech was back in the negative hitting margin in the third and final game, finishing with 12 kills and 13 hitting errors for a -.019 mark.  The Seminoles had 16 kills and hit .227 percent.


 


Sophomore libero Summer Weissing paced the Tribe defense with 14 kills.  Court general Zrinka Tomic had 25 assists, two aces and six digs.


 


For Virginia Tech, Jen Albrecht led her team with nine kills.


 


Florida State travels to Miami on Tuesday for a 7pm match.
