TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Fifth-ranked Florida State (13-2) heads to Gainesville to take on sixth-ranked Florida (12-3) in the second of four meetings between these intra-state rivals on Tuesday, March 16 at 6:30 p.m.
The Seminoles defeated the Gators 10-5 in their first meeting down in Tampa, Fla., on Steinbrenner Field as part of the inaugural Florida Four Tournament. FSU leads the all-time series 117-95-1, while UF has had the upper hand inside Alfred McKethan Stadium posting a 51-43 record.
Tuesday’s game marks the 214th meeting between Florida State and Florida as the two schools have split the last 16 games. This includes splitting the last four games played in Gainesville with the Gators winning the last two outscoring the Seminoles 11-5.
Depending on what poll you use, Tuesday’s showdown will feature a meeting between two top 10 teams for the second time in a row. The Noles and Gators rank 5th & 6th, respectively in Baseball America’s top 25 poll. FSU is ranked in the top 10 in all five major polls.
Tyler Holt, a product of Gainesville, has faired well against the Gators over his career hitting .452 (14-for-31) in eight games. Holt has registered nine runs, six walks, two RBI and is 4-for-5 in the stolen base category. Stuart Tapley, Jack Posey and freshmen Jayce Boyd are the only current Seminoles to register a home run against Florida. Posey broke a 2-2 tie with a solo home run in the top of the fifth to give the Seminoles the one-run victory in Jacksonville last year. The home run could not have come at a better time as the heavens opened in the top of the sixth washing away the rest of the game. Tapley’s home run came in a 10-2 victory in Jacksonville in 2008. Boyd connected on a two-run shot in his first collegiate at-bat down in Tampa.
Last year in Gainesville, Florida’s Buddy Munroe came through with a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth to lead Florida to a 5-4 victory over Florida State.
