TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Third-ranked Florida State (15-4) returns home following a 2-2 road trip to host Stetson (9-12) on Wednesday, March 24 at 6:00 p.m. in the first of two mid-week match-ups against the Hatters in 2010.
FSU leads the all-time series 42-20 with the Seminoles posting a 27-12 mark inside the friendly confines of Dick Howser Stadium. The Garnet and Gold have won four in a row in the series and 11 of their last 13 against the Hatters. The last victory for Stetson in the series came on May 29, 1988 in the NCAA Tallahassee Regional. On that day, the Hatters eliminated the Seminoles from the postseason tournament with a 7-2 victory.
FSU has won eight straight regular season contests including four in a row at home. The last regular season victory for the Hatters was on March 30, 1979 as Stetson piled up a series-high 14 runs in a 14-9 victory in Tallahassee.
Two years ago, these two schools met a total of four times as part of a two-game home and home mid-week series. The Seminoles won all four games outscoring the Hatters 49-11. As a freshman, Mike McGee started three of the four games hitting .571 with two home runs and nine RBI. Tyler Holt registered a .400 average in four games posting six hits in 15 at-bats. He recorded one home run, three RBI and scored eight times.
McGee was just as successful on the mound going 2-0 with a 1.38 ERA in two starts. The right hander allowed just four runs, two earned, on 11 hits in 13.0 innings of work. McGee recorded six strikeouts while limiting the Hatter hitters to a .216 team average. John Gast is the only other Seminole pitcher to see action against Stetson. The southpaw threw a scoreless inning in relief as he faced the minimum and struck out one.
McGee sparked a five-run, ninth inning rally in DeLand in the last meeting between these two schools to pace the Seminoles to the season-series sweep of the Hatters. McGee tied the game at three with a two run shot over the right field wall for his fourth home run of the season. Tyler Holt scored all the way from second for the go ahead run with two outs as Travis Stortz kicked away a chopper off the bat of Jack Rye. Dennis Guinn capped off a four hit night as he hit a two-run double to left to give the Seminoles a three-run advantage.
In 2010, freshman Robert Benincasa (1-0) will make his fourth start of the season on Wednesday. In his last outing, the right hander went 2.2 innings at Florida in earning a no decision.
