TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The No. 3-ranked Florida State sand volleyball team welcomes three East Region teams for a two-day event on Saturday and Sunday at the FSU Sand Volleyball Complex.
The Seminoles will kick off the weekend against the College of Charleston in a dual at 10 a.m. on Saturday. UAB and Georgia State will face off following the first match at 11 a.m. Sunday’s pairs bracket play will start at 9 a.m.
“There’s no place like home,” Florida State head coach Danalee Corso said. “In this sport, playing in the sand you are used to is a huge advantage. We’re really excited. I think the crowd is going to be great. There’s a lot of momentum in our sport and here in Tallahassee. I’m looking for our team to improve on our weaknesses. Hopefully, we can keep going strong and peaking physically.”
FSU will also face UAB at Noon on Saturday and College of Charleston will take on Georgia State at 1 p.m. All times are approximate because there will be 15 minutes in between each dual.
At 3 p.m. on Saturday Florida State will honors its four seniors, Mallory Kiley, Maria Milosavljevic, Amanda Saxton and Fatma Yildirim. All four have been instrumental in FSU’s success over the first two years of collegiate sand volleyball, helping the Noles tally an impressive 29-4 mark in dual match play since the sport’s inception last year.
After the Senior Day recognition, the pairs tournament bracket play will begin at 3:15 p.m. and wrap up Sunday.
The pairs tournament will be split up into two divisions. The Gold Division will feature the No. 1 and 2 pairs from all four teams and be double-elimination bracket with the final capping the weekend at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday. The Silver Division will feature 12 pairs (Nos. 3, 4 and 5 from each team) and be single elimination with a modified consolation bracket. The Silver finals will be at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday.
Sunday will also be FSU’s “Paint It Pink” promotion. Fans can get a “Paint It Pink” shirt with a $10 donation.
The Seminoles bring a 13-2 record into the event, which will serve as FSU’s final tune-up against outside competition before the AVCA National Championships in Gulf Shores, Ala. from May 3-5.
Florida State is 3-0 all-time against UAB, defeating the Blazers 5-0 earlier this season, and 2-0 against College of Charleston. This will be the Seminoles first battle with the Cougars this season, however.
