With the cross country season getting under way, the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association released the 2009 Preseason Regional Rankings with the Florida State women’s cross country team topping the list at No. 1 and the Seminole men ranking No. 3 for the South region.
On the women’s front, in-state rival Florida follows the Seminoles at No. 2 with Tennessee and Auburn rounding off the top 5, respectively. The only other Atlantic Coast Conference school to be regionally ranked in the South region is Georgia Tech at No. 15. Boston College is ranked third in the Northeast region, while Virginia (1st), Duke (2nd), Wake Forest (3rd), NC State (4th), North Carolina (7th), Clemson (11th) and Virginia Tech (12th) are all ranked in the Southeast.
As for the men, No. 1 Alabama leads the list with Auburn coming in at No. 2. The Seminoles are the only conference school to be ranked in the South region. Elsewhere, Virginia (2nd), NC State (3rd), Duke (4th), Virginia Tech (7th), Clemson (10th) and North Carolina (11th) are ranked in the Southeast region.
The Noles will continue their season this weekend in Blacksburg, Va., at the Virginia Tech Alumni Invitational on Friday, September 18. The women kick off the 5K at 6:00 p.m. with the men beginning the 8K at 6:45 p.m.
