TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida State University women’s basketball head coach Sue Semrau announced Wednesday the signing of Courtney Ward, a 5-7 guard out of Pike Road, Ala., to a National Letter of Intent.
“The addition of Courtney Ward to our program is another step forward for us,” Semrau said. “Once again, my staff did a great job of finding a player that fits our specific needs and a person who will really add to the chemistry of our team. We’re thrilled that she’s chosen to come to Florida State and she will make us a better basketball team on both ends of the floor.”
Ward, who attends Jefferson Davis High School in Montgomery, Ala., averages 15.0 points, 5.3 assists and 3.3 steals per game and led her 2006 6A state championship team in assists, steals and three-pointers last season. She was named a 2006 Alabama High School All-Star and was a 6A all-state selection in 2005 and 2006, earning first team honors last season. She was also named to the all-tournament team at the 6A state tournament.
“Courtney is a guard that can play the one, two and even the three spot which is really in the mold of what we’ve had lately,” Semrau said. “But the difference with Courtney Ward is that she can shoot the three and she stretches the defense and her ability to shoot is really going to set her apart. She’s also the kind of defender that we want to bring into this program where defense is the most important thing that we do.”
A leader on her Nike Club traveling team, the Alabama Road Runners, Ward is a four-star prospect ranked 57th overall in the HoopGurlz National Hot 100 and is ranked 32nd overall among high school guards.
