Florida State University’s women’s swimming and diving team defeated the University of Miami, 147-75, in its 2001-2002 season opener Saturday morning at the Bim Stults Aquatic Center located on the FSU campus. The Lady Seminoles improved to 14-11 overall against the Hurricanes after winning 10 of the 13 events.
Senior All-American Christy Cech placed first in the 50 and 100-meter freestyle with times of 23.76 and 51.69, respectively, as both times rank 10th fastest in FSU history. Fellow senior Keryn Krynauw touched the wall first in the 200-meter breaststroke with the eighth fastest time at FSU of 2:19.97. Freshman Lisa How swam the 10th fastest 200m butterfly in school history, winning the event in 2:05.58. Sophomore Loren Hansen took first-place in the 200m individual medley and the 500m free with times of 2:09.02 and 5:03.57, respectively.
In diving action, sophomore Chelsie Lerew finished the day placing first in the three-meter event with a score of 198.6 and fourth in the one-meter (171.95). Freshman Tiffany Manning finished third in the one-meter dive with a total of 172.2 points.
Other first-place finishes were turned in by senior team captain Amber Goodwin (200m back), freshman Angie Leach (1,000m free) and the 400m medley relay team of junior Besty Nagy, Krynauw, senior Candice Nethercott and freshman Jennie Lyes.
The Lady Seminoles return to action on October 19, when they travel to the University of Maryland for their first Atlantic Coast Conference dual meet of the season.
