Raleigh, N.C. – The No. 26 Florida State women’s tennis squad (17-6, 6-2 ACC) moved one step closer to the 2004 Atlantic Coast Conference Championship match by defeating the sixth-seeded Wake Forest Demon Deacons by a final tally of 4-2 on Friday, April 16, 2004. The Seminoles took two of three matches in the doubles area to pick up the first point followed by three of five singles matches to move on to the conference semifinals.
FSU opened the evening with wins at the number one and two doubles positions. Freshman Roxanne Clarke (Cape Town, South Africa/Clapham) and junior Mihaela Moldovan (Bucharest, Romania/Emil Racovita) won in the top slot, 8-3. Senior Anca Dumitrescu (Bucharest, Romania/VCU) and sophomore Lindsay Deason (St. Petersburg, FL/Boca Raton Prep) sealed the point, dropping the Wake Forest tandem of Danielle Schwartz and Aimee Smith, 8-3.
In singles, the Tribe picked up wins at the one, two and four positions to secure the team victory. Dumitrescu battled at the number one position, dropping the first set, but winning the third set tiebreaker and posting a final score of 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(2). Moldovan continued her undefeated singles streak, picking up her 23rd singles victory of the season, over Davis, 6-0, 6-4. Clarke took the match against Elizabeth Proctor, 6-1, 6-1 to add the fourth point to the Garnet and Gold scoreboard.
The Seminoles return to action tomorrow at 1:00 p.m., facing #2 seed Duke. Florida State lost to the Blue Devils at home earlier in the season by a score of 4-3.
