The Florida State women’s tennis team hosted their first event of the season in their annual Lady Seminole Fall Classic being held at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center. The Lady Seminoles welcomed eight teams from around the south region for some fall tournament action.
In Singles flight A competition sophomore newcomer Anca Dumitrescu received a first round bye. Seeded third in her flight Dumitrescu would defeat Auburn’s K. Illaronova in straight sets, (6-3, 6-0). Dumitrescu returns to action Saturday, Oct. 6th at 8:00 a.m. when she will face TCU’s P. Aburto. Returning senior for the Lady Seminoles, Jessica Balbuena defeated Jacksoville’s Pinciotti in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0. Later that afternoon Balbuena would defeat the fifth seed in flight A, K. Gaber of TCU to advance to the third round. Balbuena is set to face the fourth see, M. Toro of Miami Saturday morning.
In Flight B singles Florida State entered Amber Tantee. Tantee would defeat Jacksonville’s M. Dowumon and FIU’s N. El Sawaf to advance to third round match play. Tantee will take on 3rd seed A. Sinclair of USF Saturday morning.
Entering in the C singles flight for Florida State was returner Beth Lawrence. Lawrence would defeat Georgia Southern’s S. Williams, 6-1, 6-4. Later Lawrence would fall to the fourth seed of the C draw in Miami’s DeVilliers.
In doubles action Balbuena teamed with Lauren Walker in flight A to defeat JU’s Pinciotti and Kaftalovich by a score of 8-1. The Seminole tandem would advance to round two where they would fall to Auburn’s Illianarova and Maurer. In the same flight senior standout Alida Gallovits and Dumitrescu received a first round bye before defeating UCF’s Gunawan and Samara 8-4 to advance to round four of the tournament.
More action will continue throughout the weekend at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center.
