The Florida State University women’s tennis team competed their first day of fall tournament action at the Roberta Alison Tournament being held in Tuscaloosa, Ala. Six Lady Seminoles advanced to the second round of competition in their respective draws.
In singles draw A Seminole sophomore newcomer Anca Dumitrescu defeated Miami’s Mira Radu in straight sets going 6-3, 6-4. Dumitrescu advances to the second round of action where she will face Houston’s Sarah Borwell, Saturday, Sept. 29 at 9:30 a.m.
In Singles Draw B, returning Senior for the Lady Seminoles, Jessica Balbuena defeated University of Louisiana-Monroe’s Matilde Taborda in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2. Balbuena will face Miami’s Karem Harboe in round two action on Sat. at 9:30 a.m.
In Singles C Draw competition Lady Seminole newcomer Lauren Walker defeated Houston’s Jen Baccarani 6-2, 5-7, 6-3. Walker advances to round two to face Washington State’s Lorena Arias, Saturday at 9:30 a.m.
In Singles Draw D, Lady Seminole Meredith Fish defeated Louisiana-Monroe’s Anna Yenyk in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1 and will see action in round two where she is set to face Washington State’s Chris Martinez. Closing out the Singles Draw competition for the Lady Seminoles in draw E was newcomer Amber Tantee who took the win from Mississippi State’s Justyna Switala, 6-2, 6-0. Tantee faces Miami’s Camilla Gould Saturday at 8:00 a.m. Junior returnee for Florida State, Beth Lawrence took a first round Bye in tournament action and will face Washington State’s Zsofi Fodor at 11:00 a.m. Saturday.
In doubles action Balbuena and Walker teamed together to defeat Louisiana-Monroe’s Taborda and Yenyk 8-2. The Seminole tandem will face Auburn University’s Illarionova and Maurer Saturday at 1:00 p.m. In Draw B Lady Seminoles Tantee and Dumitrescu defeated Alabama’s Cremers and Mathew 8-6. The two advanced to round two were they fell to Arias and Martinez of Washington State by default. In Draw C Fish and Lawrence fell to Auburn’s Suitor and Sauerborn. The two then went to the consolation round and fell to Washington State’s Rogonovic and Sallai.
The Lady Seminoles return to action at the Roberta Alison Fall Tournament on Saturday, Sept. 29.
