FSU Women’s Tennis Defeats Georgia Tech On The Road, 6-1

TALLAHASSEE, FL.–In their fifth ACC match of the season, things finally seemed to come together for the Florida State women’s tennis team as they took an impressive 6-1 victory over No. 37 Georgia Tech in Atlanta, GA, this afternoon. With the win Florida State improves to 10-9 overall and 2-3 in ACC play.


Nanette Duxin and Alida Gallovits got the Seminoles off to a good start as they defeated Laura Ozolins and Jamie Wong at No. 2 doubles by a score of 8-4. Samantha Schoeffel and Jessica Balbuena, ranked No. 38 by the ITA in doubles, clinched the first point of the day for the Noles with an 8-2 win over Mysti Morris and Bobbi Guthrie at the No. 1 position. Moments later, Natalie Carratala’ and partner Marina Raic completed the sweep by defeating Mason Miller and Fallon Koon, 8-4, at No. 3.


Florida State kept the momentum going in singles, taking a 3-0 lead after getting straight set victories from Alida Gallovits at No. 1 and Samantha Schoeffel at No. 2. Gallovits defeated Debbie Reynolds, 6-3, 6-1, while Schoeffel rolled past Jamie Wong, 6-2, 6-2.


The Seminoles needed one more match to go their way for the overall win, but the Yellow Jackets would not give up without a fight. Nanette Duxin came from behind to take a close first set, 7-6, against Kristen Roberson at No. 5 singles, and then went on to win the second set 6-1, thereby clinching the match for Florida State.


Jessica Balbuena at No. 3 singles and Christina Denny at No. 4 were down matchpoints before edging past their opponents in the third set. Balbuena defeated Mysti Morris, 6-2, 4-6, 7-5, and Denny got the win over Mason Miller, 4-6, 6-4, 7-5. At No. 6 singles, Laura Ozolins put Georgia Tech on the board with a 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 win over Marina Raic, making the final score 6-1 in favor of the Seminoles.


I am really pleased with how well the girls competed today”, said head coach Lise Gregory. “We have been battling hard for so long and things are finally starting to go our way.”


The women will be back in action tomorrow Sunday April 8th at noon when they are scheduled to take on the Clemson Tigers.
