March 14, 2001

TALLAHASSEE, FL.–The 40th-ranked Florida State women’s tennis team improved to 8-6 on the season yesterday with a 4-3 victory over No. 32 San Diego State in San Diego, CA. This was the second straight win for the Seminoles against a ranked opponent.

In doubles, Florida State got a win from the tandem of Jessica Balbuena and Samatha Schoeffel at No. 1, but fell short at No. 2 and 3 doubles.

The Seminoles really stepped it up in singles, winning four out of six matches, all in straight sets. Junior Alida Gallovits, ranked 67th in the nation, took out San Diego State’s Silvia Tornier at the No. 1 singles position, 6-1, 6-3.

Freshman Samantha Schoeffel, who played at the No. 2 spot for the Noles, wasted no time against San Diego State’s WW, winning 6-3, 6-0. Schoeffel remains undefeated in singles so far this year, taking her eight straight match.

FSU junior Jessica Balbuena extended her winning streak to five by defeating Katey Becker 6-1, 6-1 at No. 4.

Freshman Christina Denny at No. 3 clinched the match for Florida State as she defeated Whitney Wells 6-4, 6-3.

After going 2-1 against tough competition on the road the women now return home to prepare for ACC opponent Virginia. The match between the Seminoles and Cavaliers is scheduled for Sunday March 18th at 10:00 a.m. and will be played at FSU’s Scott Speicher Tennis Center.
