FSU Women’s Tennis Has Successful Opening Day At Gator Fall Classic

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Florida State’s Anca Dumitrescu and Mihaela Moldovan each advanced to the quarterfinals of the Flight A singles draw at the 2002 Gator Fall Classic. Meredith Fish and Daniela Gheorghe also reached the quarterfinals of the Flight B singles draw. The doubles tandems of Amberly Tantee and Gheorghe as well as Beth Lawrence and Natalie Tirapelli made it to the quarterfinals of the Flight A doubles draw.


FSU newcomer Mihaela Moldovan took two matches on day one to advance to the quarterfinals of the Gator Fall Classic. Moldovan knocked off South Florida’s Fabiana Taverna (6-4, 7-5) and Karolina Rubickova of Florida Atlantic (6-2, 6-1) in singles Flight A action. Dumitrescu also moved on after she downed Florida Atlantic’s Alena Dvorakova (4-6, 6-4, 6-4) in the second round.


Fish continued her dominating play this fall as she advanced in the Flight B singles draw. Fish defeated Belen Pandre of South Florida (6-0, 1-0 ret.) and Miami’s Igna de Villiers (6-3, 6-4). Gheorghe became the fourth Lady Seminole to advance in the main draws as she took two wins in Flight B singles action. She cruised to a 6-3, 6-3 first round victory over Jacksonville’s Nisrene Hajbane and finished the day defeating Emmanuelle Sauze of Central Florida (6-0, 6-2).


In doubles, Lawrence and Tirapelli battled back to emerge with an 8-6 second round win over Georgia’s Jennifer Hodge and Alexandra Smith. Tantee and Gheorghe also came away victorious with an 8-4 win over Patricia Kolendo and Fabiana Taverna of South Florida.


Competition continues at Linder Stadium at Ring Tennis Complex in Gainesville on Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m. Moldovan will meet up with Mari Toro of Miami at 10:00 a.m., while Dumitrescu is scheduled to face Florida’s Jennifer Magley at 10:30 a.m. in Flight A singles action.
