The 33rd ranked Florida State women’s tennis team headed to Coral Gables, Fl. this weekend to face No. 40 rival University of Miami. This was to be the 14th meeting between the two schools as the Seminoles were close to taking the win over Miami but fell 3-4.
The Lady Noles started the afternoon off to a slow start losing the doubles point to the Hurricanes, only able to win one of three matches. Samantha Schoeffel and teammate Jessica Balbuena took the win over Miami’s Katia Bogomolova and Marcy Hora 9-7.
In Singles competition the Seminoles came out ready to play. The first two matches of the day went to FSU. At the No. 4 position Nanette Duxin defeated Hora in straight sets 6-1, 6-4. Next to follow would be a win from Schoeffel at the No.6 position over Miami’s Sihem Bennacer 6-1, 6-1. This now put the Seminoles up 2-1, but Miami would soon come back. Miami tied the match at 2-2 with a win from 99th ranked Bogomolova against Seminole Balbuena. Marina Raic was next to finish and brought FSU another win. Raic fought the match out till the end and defeated Scaglione, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, once again giving the Seminoles the lead of 3-2. The final matches of the day, however, went to Miami with loses from both Alida Gallovits and Christina Denny, the Hurricanes took the win 4-3.
The Seminoles will next face Florida International University Sunday, February 25th in Miami at 11:00 a.m.
