Tallahassee, Fla. – The Florida State women’s tennis team hosts the Lady Seminole Classic from October 29-31, 2004 at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center. There are several teams from around the state and in the league included in the singles and doubles tournament. Virginia, Georgia Tech, Baylor, USF, UCF, Stetson, Jacksonville and Bethune Cookman are expected to descend upon Tallahassee tomorrow.
The Seminoles are at the halfway point of the fall season after competing at the Gator Invite, ITA Riviera All-American Championships and the Wilson/ITA South Regional Championships. Overall, the Tribe’s fall season has gone extremely well – five Seminoles have at least two wins in both singles and doubles over three events. Junior Mihaela Moldovan (Bucharest, Romania/Emil Racovita) leads the group with five singles wins while sophomore Roxanne Clarke (Cape Town, South Africa/Clapham) and senior Amberly Tantee (Dana Point, CA/Futures) have four doubles wins apiece.
Moldovan’s outstanding play at the regional championship tournament earned her the second alternate spot for the ITA Indoor Championships. The second, of three championship events, takes place next weekend (November 4-7) at the University of Michigan. The draw includes the top 32 collegiate women’s tennis players in the nation.
Play begins on Friday morning with doubles matches at 9:00 a.m. followed by singles beginning at 10:45 a.m. There will be two rounds of doubles on Friday and one round on Saturday. Winners will be crowned on Sunday.
