FSU Women’s Tennis Team Notches Win Against FIU

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida State Lady Seminoles (5-2) defeated
the Florida International Golden Panthers in a tight 5-4 match Saturday
afternoon at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center. Neither team could pull
away from the other and entering the doubles portion of the match it was
tied at 3-3.

FSU sophomore Marina Raic got FSU started in the point column with
a win at No. 6 singles. Raic started slow but came back to defeat FIU’s
Cristina Campana in three sets, 0-6, 6-1, 6-3. Following a loss at No. 5
singles, FSU’s Kia Asberg but the Lady Noles up again with a win at No. 3
singles. Asberg, who was playing in her first match of the season at No.
3, won in straight sets for her fifth win of the spring.

With the score 2-1, FSU’s Weber fell on court four to FIU’s Mariana
Faustinelli 6-4, 6-4. With two singles matches remaining to be decided the
match was all tied at two. FSU sophomore Alida Gallovits forced a third
set on court No. 1 by winning the second set 6-4. In the third set,
Gallovits breezed to a 6-2 win to put the Lady Seminoles up by one point
yet again. As Gallovits wrapped up her fifth victory of the season, junior
Nantte Duxin was attempting to put the Lady Seminoles up by two points
entering the doubles. Duxin and FIU’s Maria Montoya battled through the
third set before Montoya broke Duxin at 5-5 and then served out the match.

In the doubles part of the match, FSU got off to a strong start on
court No. 2. Asberg and Raic closed out Montoya and Nizri at No. 2 doubles
to give the Lady Seminoles a 4-3 lead with two doubles matches remaining.
It was Asberg and Riac’s fourth consecutive win and second at No. 2. On
court No. 1, FSU was down 5-3 and on court No. 3, FSU was up 5-3. FSU’s
Ali Weber and Jessica Balbuena took charge of the match on court No. 3 and
pulled away to win 8-3. The win gave FSU five points and the match.

Florida State will return to the courts on Sunday to face Southern
Mississippi at noon.
