TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida State women’s tennis team opens the 2002-2003 season with the annual Lady Seminole Fall Classic. The tournament is being held at the Scott Speicher Tennis Center from Friday, Sept. 27th through Sunday, Sept. 29th with a few matches being played at Florida A&M. FSU welcomes nine teams from around the south in, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Georgia Southern, South Florida, Florida International, Stetson, Central Florida, Florida A&M and Jacksonville.
Florida State’s Anca Dumitrescu, Mihaela Moldovan and Christina Denny all received a first round bye in the singles flight A division. Their action will begin Friday, Sept. 27th at 10:30 p.m., except for Dumitrescu who starts at 11 a.m.
Two FSU newcomers will see their first action as a Seminole in the Singles A Draw. Broooke Cordell, a transfer from Tennessee, will face Anna Westin of Central Florida and Daniela Gheorghe, who transferred from Fresno State, is paired with Charlano Brown of FAMU. Both matches are set to start at 8 a.m.
In singles flight B, Lady Seminoles Meredith Fish, Amberly Tantee, Alina Mihailescu and Beth Lawrence will all see action. One of FSU’s five newcomers, Natalie Tirapelli, will play in singles flight C and is seeded first in her draw. Tirapelli transferred to Florida State this year from the University of Connecticut.
Dumitrescu and Tirapelli will team together in doubles play as they prepare to take on Stetson’s Hayden and Bohannon, while Lady Seminoles Denny and Mihailescu recived a first round bye as the No. 4 seed. In the B draw for doubles, FSU’s Brooke Cordell and Tantee will face Stetson’s Woerle and Mollman, while Daniela Gheorghe and Lawrence pair up against Guy and Wollet of Georgia Southern.
