April 3, 2000

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. — The Florida State women’s tennis team captured
their 15th win of the season Monday afternoon and handed the University of
Utah its ninth loss of the year. The Lady Seminoles improved to 15-4 while
the Utes fell to 6-9.

FSU got things started with two quick wins at the No. 3 and No. 5
single’s positions. Florida State senior Kia Asberg won her 16th match of
the season by defeating Utah’s Cassie Kasteler 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 and
sophomore Marina Raic improved her record to 11-8 with a 6-2, 6-2 win over
Utah’s Frida Kareld at No. 5.

FSU sophomore Jessica Balbuena and junior Nanette Duxin were the
next two Lady Seminoles to come off the courts with victories. Balbuena
downed the Utes’ Linn Ronnberg at No. 4 singles, 6-3, 6-0 and Duxin took
her 13th match of the year with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Utah’s Irini Kotoglou
at No. 2.

Florida State senior Ali Weber wrapped up her 12th win of the year
by defeating Utah’s Anna Stechert in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 6. At
No. 1 singles, Florida State sophomore Alida Gallovits, the country’s
85th-ranked player, opened the match by winning the first set 6-3, but then
lost the next two sets to Utah’s Megan Dorny to drop the match, 3-6, 6-3,
6-4. The loss was Gallovits seventh of the season and snapped a two-match
winning streak.

In the doubles portion of the mach, Florida State defaulted at No.
3 due to some nagging injuries and won at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions.
At No. 1, Balbuena teamed with Duxin to win their first match of the spring
together, 8-4 over Utah’s Brooke Wilkinson and Kasteler. Asberg and Raic
teamed up for their 13th win of the dual match season and eighth at the No.
2 position, defeating Utah’s Dorny and Ronnberg 8-5.

“Our main priority is to get healthy this week,” said FSU head
coach Lise Gregory. “We have a couple of injuries that just won’t go away
and so this week our focus will be on getting everyone healthy enough for
the matches this weekend.”

Florida State will conclude its regular season at home this weekend
against ACC foes Georgia Tech and Clemson. The Lady Seminoles will face
the Yellow Jackets on Saturday at noon and the Lady Tigers on Sunday at
11:00 a.m. On Saturday, FSU will be looking to win for the 12th time in 13
meetings against the Yellow Jackets and on Sunday, the Lady Seminoles will
try and win for the eighth time in 16 meetings against the Clemson Lady
Tigers.
