Tallahassee – The Florida State women’s tennis team completed the first day of the ITA Southern Regional Championships on Friday in Athens, GA. The three-day event, hosted by the University of Georgia Bulldogs, is taking place at Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
In doubles A bracket action, junior Mihaela Moldovan and senior Christina Denny made it to the third round before being losing the tiebreaker 9-8(1) to Minor/Koppelle from Alabama. Senior Anca Dumitrescu and newcomer Roxanne Clarke also paired up but lost in the second round to Stephenson/Bentley from Alabama, 9-7.
In the singles A bracket, Dumitrescu won the fourth round to setup a match between Florida’s Jennifer Magley. Dumitrescu lost the first set (6-1) and battled back to 5-5 serve before dropping the match 7-5. Magley went on to win one of two singles championship brackets, earning a spot at the NCAA National Indoor Championships
In the upper bracket of singles A, Mihaela Moldovan made it to the fourth round on Sunday before losing to Katarina Palenikova, 6-4, 1-6, 6-3. Daniela Gheorghe lost in the first round to Miami’s Staci Stevens, 6-0, 6-4 as did senior Christina Denny, who dropping the match to South Florida’s Gabriela Duch 6-4, 6-1 in the first round.
After losing in the first round to Karem Harboe from Ole Miss, 6-1, 6-1, newcomer Roxanne Clarke went on to win four straight consolation rounds winning the last round from Lord Andrade from South Florida by default.
In the first two rounds of B singles, Alina Mihailescu and Natalie Tirapelli breezed through competition, with both receiving first round byes. Mihailescu defeated Courtney Jonson from Florida International 6-1, 6-4 and then went on to beat Sonja Nikolic from Alabama 6-3, 6-2. After meeting Yumi Ueda from Mississippi State in the third round on Sunday morning and winning 1-6, 6-3, 6-2, the Constanta, Romania native met fellow Nole Natalie Tirapelli whom she bested 6-3, 6-1. In all, Mihailescu lost 2 sets, playing seven total.
En route to meeting Mihailescu, Tirapelli played Marritt Jansma from Alabama Birmingham defeating her in straight sets 6-3, 6-3, advancing to the third round to face Mississippi State’s Hayley Rudman. She lost the first set 1-6 but came back to win 6-3, 6-2 to stay alive for one more round. On Sunday morning, the St. Petersburg, Fla. native met Nikhila Narra from Southern Mississippi besting her 6-2, 6-3 to but eventually lost to Mihailescu in her final round. She dropped two sets 6-3, 6-1.
In the singles A upper bracket, senior Nicole Cercone received a first round bye, going on to face Beth Hayden from Stetson in the second round on Friday. Hayden won 1-6, 6-4, 6-1.
In doubles B action, the team of Mihailescu and Tirapelli, won the first three rounds before defaulting in the fourth round. FSU beat Epps/Gray from Auburn (8-6), Bohannon/Levin from Stetson (8-1) and Guerroro/Johnson from Florida International (8-1) before bowing out the fourth round.
In the same bracket, Cercone teamed with Stauss from Georgia Tech to defeat Alarcon/Jones from Troy State 8-6. The pair lost the second round to Serret/Rudman from Mississippi State 8-3.
The 2003 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships the national’s premier collegiate indoor tennis tournament is the second of three national championship events held during the 2003-04. This first two ITA Women’s All-American Championships took place in Los Angeles while the third event is a season ending NCAA Championships held in May.
The Noles next tournament is the USF Invitational taking place October 24-26 in Tampa, Fla.
