Tallahassee, FL –
The 17th-ranked Florida State softball team (9-1) won their fourth game in a row Saturday afternoon as junior pitcher Leslie Malerich struck out 12 batters and recorded her fourth complete game and second shutout of the season. Malerich limited the Eagles to just three hits as FSU continued their best start since the 1998 season.
“I am extremely happy with the way we have pitched in this tournament and for the whole season so far,” said head coach JoAnne Graf. “Boston College is a very good team and they played us very tough today. Leslie pitched a great game and we are glad to head into the final day of the tournament as the #1 seed.”
The Seminoles got their only run in the third inning when freshman Elisa Velasco reached base on an error and Natalie Bennett advanced her to second on a sacrifice bunt. Senior outfielder Serita Brooks then singled in the eventual winning run off of Boston College starter TeKae Malandris.
Malerich made the lead stand up as she allowed just two hits and struck out seven batters the rest of the way. Malerich now has a complete game victory in all four of her appearances in 2001 and she leads FSU with 33 strikeouts and she lowered her ERA to just .026 for the season.
With the win, the Seminoles will enter the final day of the 2001 Sunshine State Tournament as the No. 1 seed. The rest of the tournament seeding will be determined by the outcome of Saturday’s final two games.
