The Florida State men’s tennis team took another tough loss today as they fell to 33rd-ranked South Florida 6-1. The Seminoles were able to take one win in the doubles matches, although that would not be enough to secure the point. They would also see another win in singles from freshman, Alex Herrera. The Seminoles are now 4-4 in ACC action and 9-12 on the season.
The afternoon began with the doubles competition with USF taking the point. The Seminoles were able to take a win in the doubles portion with Herrera and Jarrod Owen defeating the Bulls Jorge Escollon and Boris Babic 8-4 at the No. 2 position. Although they fought for every point the Seminoles tandem of Xavier Luscan and Bartosz Koldej fell to USF’s Paco Antelo and Martin Wetzel 9-7 at the No.1 position.
Alex Herrera would again see another win for the day after defeating his opponent Jorge Escollon in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. It would be the only point of the day for the Noles. At the No. 1 position Florida State’s Luscan faced USF’s Antelo. Antelo, who is ranked No. 52 in singles competition, defeated Luscan 6-4, 6-4. Seminoles Rodrigo Laub and Owen would both take their matches into the third and final set before USF could take the win. Laub won his first set against Max Dockhorn, and then lost the second. In the third and final set it was tied up at 6-6 before Dockhorn would defeat Laub in the tie breaker 7-4. Playing at the No. 5 position FSU’s Owen would take Nadim Naser of USF into three sets as well. Owen won the first set 7-5, fell in the second set 6-4, and would fall again in the third 7-5.
The Seminoles will now have a week to practice before they face Florida A&M on Friday, April 13th at 5:00 p.m.
