Tallahassee – The Florida State men’s and women’s track and field squad completed day two with four event wins, at the FSU Relays taking place at the Mike Long Track and Field Complex in Tallahassee, FL from March 17-20, 2004. After the first two days of light competition, the Seminoles sit in second (men) and third (women) amongst team competition.
Freshman Lindsey Nelson (Jacksonville, FL/Mandarin) won her third event title of the season, winning the shot put with a mark of 44’10.75. Nelson posted event wins at the Snowbird Invite and FAMU Relays. Senior Mandy Kinney (Lawrenceville, GA/Wyoming) finished the day with third place in the hammer throw (161’11”) and sixth place in the shot put (42′). Sophomore Kate Purcell (West Point, PA/Southern Illinois-Edwardsville) won the javelin throw in the heptathlon event, throwing 138’5″.
Senior Mari Leitner (Pensacola, FL/Washington) posted a collegiate best time of 19:07.32, good for fifth place in the 5000m run. Sophomore Deanna Lane (Marietta, GA/Alan C. Pope) also competing in the heptathlon, ran 2:33.39 in the 800m run and recorded a mark of 16’6.5″ in the long jump.
On the men’s side, sophomore John Fallone (Rochester, N.Y./Virginia Tech) won the shot put with a throw of 53’7.5″. Fellow sophomore Andrew Diakos (Naples, FL/Barron-Collier) followed suit posting a victory in the hammer throw. Diakos recorded a mark of 181’1″ to earn first place. Sophomore Brian Holley (Jacksonville, FL/Fletcher) and junior Dan Royal (Ft. Myers, FL/Ft. Myers) placed third and fourth with throws of 166’10 and 164’06, respectively.
The action picks up with field events at 10:00 a.m. through the women’s javelin throw (5:30 p.m. start). The running events kickoff at 11:20 a.m. with the men’s 110m high hurdles and end with the start of the men’s gold 5000m event at 8:55 p.m.
