Game Notes

FIRST HALF

Myron Rolle

Safety Myron Rolle had started 32 consecutive games before tonight …  but it was for a good reason.  The junior was in Birmingham, Ala., today where he was named a 2008 Rhodes Scholar.  He is the third FSU student, and second student-athlete, to earn the prestigious honor in the last four years.  Rolle, who learned of the honor at approximately 5:25 p.m. and arrived at the stadium at 8:34 p.m.

“It was a very exciting day and I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to study at Oxford.  This was a great experience and I will remember today for a lifetime.”

Everette And His Sacks

With his 2.5 sacks tonight, Everette Brown now has 11.5 sacks this season which puts him up from 13th into sixth place on FSU’s single-season sacks list.  He now has 21 sacks for his career, putting him 9th on FSU’s all-time list.  With 3.5 tackles for loss tonight, Brown now has 44.5 career tackles for loss which puts him into sole possession of second place in FSU history ahead of both Ron Simmons (44) and Travis Johnson (42.5).

Defense Scores

Everette Brown forced a fumble and Derek Nicholson picked it up and ran it back 22 yards for a Florida State touchdown in the second quarter tonight.  Before tonight, the last time FSU returned a fumble for a touchdown was in 2006 at Duke when Lawrence Timmons returned a fumble 36 yards for a TD.  Nicholson recorded his first career fumble recovery and first career touchdown on the play while for Brown, it was the junior’s third forced fumble of the season and fourth of his career.  Including tonight, the FSU defense has scored in four different games for a total of 16 points this season.

Rushing To Score

Antone Smith’s 31 first half rushing yards put the senior’s career total to 2,145 which moved him ahead of Sean Jackson (2,133) and into 9th place on FSU’s career rushing list.  With his second quarter TD, Smith, with 14 rushing TDs on the season, is now in sole possession of fourth place on FSU’s single-season rushing TDs list.  Smith now has a rushing TD in nine of FSU’s 11 games this season.

No score

There was no score after the first quarter tonight marking the first time since last year’s Boston College game on November 3, 2007 that the Seminoles have been involved in a game that had a scoreless first quarter.  The Seminoles scored both of their first half TDs in the second quarter which is typical for this year’s team as FSU has scored more points in the second quarter this season (now 119) than any other quarter.  FSU’s 21 second quarter points tonight’s matches the Seminoles season-high for points in a second quarter as FSU also scored 21 points in the season-opener vs. Western Carolina.  FSU also scored 21 points in the first quarter vs. Chattanooga.  The most FSU has scored in any quarter this season is 27 in the third quarter of the Western Carolina game.
