TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Florida State Baseball team will host the 29th annual Garnet & Gold game on Friday, October 19 at 6:00 p.m. The annual scrimmage, which marks the end of the fall baseball season, will be held on Mike Martin Field inside Dick Howser Stadium. Admission to the game is free.
Fans are encouraged to arrive at the stadium at 5:00 p.m. to watch the players take batting practice before the start of the scrimmage. The Seminoles will also Paint it Pink on Friday in an effort to raise awareness for breast cancer by wearing pink wrist bands, donning ribbons on their caps and painting the bases pink. The FSU batgirls will also be on hand wearing pink t-shirts.
Florida State finished the 2012 season with 50 wins and advanced to the College World Series for the third time in the last five years and for the 21st appearance overall. The Seminoles went on to tie a league record with 24 ACC wins last year, while claiming their sixth straight Atlantic Division title.
The 2012-13 team returns 20 players including five positions starters and nine pitchers who threw at least 15.0 innings. Despite losing three starting infielders, a starter in center field and one of the top closers in the nation, the Seminoles welcome back four starting pitchers in Freshmen All-Americans Mike Compton and Brandon Leibrandt, senior right hander Scott Sitz and junior right hander Peter Miller. Catcher Stephen McGee is back after starting all 67 games from behind the plate a season ago and senior Justin Gonzalez returns to pace the Seminole offense as the top returning hitter.
Friday night also marks one of the last chances to see some of new faces in action before the start of the 2013 season. FSU welcomes 15 newcomers including nine freshmen and six junior college transfer. This year’s incoming class, which was ranked 19th-nationally by Collegiate Baseball newspaper, is made up of five pitchers (including two left handers), four infielders, four outfielders, one catcher and one utility player.
Last year, Garnet topped Gold, 4-3 as Josh Delph went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs to lead the Garnet squad en route to earning MVP honors. James Ramsey and Giovanny Alfonzo paced Gold with two hits apiece, while John Nogowski drove in two of the three runs for the Gold team.
Brandon Leibrandt and Mike Compton both threw two scoreless innings for the Garnet squad, while Jose Brizuela pitched a perfect ninth to pick up the save. For the Gold team, Luke Weaver and Brandon Johnson threw a pair of scoreless and hitless innings as both pitchers registered two strikeouts. Gage Smith pitched a scoreless ninth for Gold as he allowed just one walk.
The Seminoles will also host the Ontario Blue Jays on Monday, October 22 at 3 p.m. in the final scrimmage of the fall season.
