TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (seminoles.com) – Hall of Fame head coach Mike Martin and the Seminole Baseball team will play host to the 28th Annual Garnet and Gold game Friday, November 4 at 6:00 p.m. The annual scrimmage, which marks the traditional end of the fall baseball season, will be held on Mike Martin Field inside of Dick Howser Stadium and is free to the public.
Fans are encouraged to arrive at the stadium at 5:00 p.m. to watch the Seminoles take batting practice before the start of the game as the fall classic is sponsored by the `Vote for James Ramsey for Homecoming Chief Committee’.
Florida State finished the 2011 season with 49 wins, played for the ACC Championship for the third year in a row and advanced to the NCAA Super Regionals coming within one win of making the trek to Omaha.
The Seminoles returns 19 players from last year’s squad and welcome back all four starting infielders (Jayce Boyd, Devon Travis, Justin Gonzalez and Sherman Johnson). James Ramsey and Seth Miller return as starters in the outfield for the Garnet & Gold. Hunter Scantling, Brian Busch and Scott Sitz head up this year’s returning pitchers.
Friday night also marks the last chance to see some of new faces in action. FSU welcomes 17 newcomers including 16 freshmen and on junior college transfer. This year’s class, which was ranked 16th-nationally by Collegiate Baseball, is made up of seven pitchers including five left handers, two infielders, two outfielders, two catchers and four utility players.
Last year, the Garnet team defeated the Gold squad, 7-0. Senior leaders Tye Buckley and Parker Brunelle ignited the Garnet offense with two hits and an RBI apiece. Most Valuable Player Stuart Tapley, another senior, provided some power with a double and a walk for the Garnet as well.
